4 lane motorways

Do you know how to correctly drive on a 4 line motorway?

Needed much more subtlety.
They're out there, they want to fly off the handle, but this needed more flair, more panache, some mopey tale about an incident with a fast lane motor hog and zero consideration for others.

... And what's all the ruckus about super beam ultra bright LED lights all of a sudden, it's our god given right to be able to blind whoever we shall choose etc...

Drive between Milwaukee and Chicago and then complain about UK roads.
No rules about filtering to the slow lane.
Slow is empty a lot of the time.
People will be alone and in the fast lane going below the speed limit.
HGVs will occupy all the lanes going similar speeds.
People thinking signaling gives them the right to change lanes rather than a warning of a future maneuver

I quite got into driving on the US interstates and the likes. Undertaking is fine over there so I just stuck in the 2nd lane and so avoided everyone trying to leave or join the road. I stuck to the speed limit. Most others seemed not to and they drove around me, one way or the other, quite happily ...

There are no rules about filtering to the slow lane here either - we don't have a slow lane.

HGVs are generally quite well behaved but if one attempts to overtake another it seems a lot of heads explode at the concept of maybe having to slow down slightly for a few seconds.

I used to be an absolute twonk of a driver when I was younger - happily do a tun on a motorway, following too close, taking risks, angry. Then one day on the M6 between Crewe and Stoke I witnessed a 10 car pile up - lorry on the inside lane swerved right, hitting two cars and causing a 4x4 to clip the car in front and land on top, pretty much, of a Ford Fiesta in the outside lane, then several cars pile into the back of the disaster as they were all too close to the cars in front.

The three hours I spent sat on the M6 that afternoon gave me plenty of time to mull on the dangers of driving and how one idiot (in this case the lorry driver, but also those following too closely) can cause a disaster. And I was one more likely than most to cause an accident.

After that, I've been 70mph in the inside lane, big gaps, bobbing along overtaking lorries and caravans when needs be, nice big hard shoulder for an emergency escape. And the big change is I'm waaaaay more relaxed when driving and other drivers don't bother me at all. I see people tailgating, constantly on their brakes and it just looks so stressful. For a peaceful driving life I can recommend being an inside lane snail.

It’s amazing what an experience like that can do to you, very similar thing happened to me well over ten years ago and to be honest I actually avoid the motorway now when ever possible, it’s like a free for all lottery on getting to your destination safely. Anything long distance, I use the trains now and actually enjoy my journey.

I find drivers down south, particularly on the M1 will automatically move in to the outside lane regardless of what traffic is in the other lanes. Last time I drove home from London I'd see cars joining the motorway and instantly join the 4th lane which was crawling along at 40mph while there was very little in lanes 1, 2 & 3.
I'd stay in the inside lane with cruise control at 75mph only occasionally having to overtake something.

I just don't understand the mentality of people. Surely they can see they're in the slowest lane even if they call it the fast lane.
