The amount of posters on here who have been calling for 4-4-2 with straq up top, did u learn anything last night???

I'm not going to blame 4-4-2 on everything last night as the reason we lost the game but moyes gets slated for not playing this out dated formation and last night showed up it's flaws.

Injuries in the game played a massive part of the result of this game but it showed we really don't have two strikers who could play up top for 90 mins or have the quality/form to do so. And secondly once any options were taken away from moyes via the injuries and we were stuck in a 4-4-2 we got absolutely overun by a 5 man midfield.

At that point of the game we really needed to switch to one up top but if moyes had the option and have of done that I can imagine people going mad on here!

Anyways I just hope some posters realize the answers to our problems isn't 4-4-2. 4-2-3-1 is by far the better formation and is not the reason we have looked poor this season nor is moyes mythical defensive setup...

We all need to accept our squad isn't up to scratch.
 

I don't know if I'm ready to abandon the 4-4-2. It depends on your personnel. And when your personnel includes Neville and Heitinga in midfield, you're screwed.

I don't want to do a mass generality re: the formation.

With injuries, I think it's less likely that we play this.

But to say never? Nah.

EDIT: Although I just realized you could slot Heitinga in for Jags and Barkley in for Osman and still attempt this. Scary defense though.
 
I think mostly everyone just wanted something different mate. I don't think we'd have done any better with Cahill starting instead of Straq, do you? Ie a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 whatevs

I would be amazed if anyone wanted a centre midfield duo of Neville and Heitinga, with Saha and Straq up front.

At least he tried something different. The injuries killed us, but that team looked all sorts of wrong from the get go. Baines isn't getting involved half as much as previous seasons, Donovan is obviously tired, we missed Fellaini, a fit Rodwell and some bro named Barkley who will hopefully one day get a chuffing game again

We need some creativity and a striker ASAP otherwise it's all going to be a bit average
 
its not the formation that bothers me, its the personell. we still need a creative player in the centre, balance on the wings, and a decent forward. basically, were screwed. this style of play isn't going anywhere

This. You want to blame the formation but not the players playing in it? Jesus.

And off one performance too. Next you'll be saying we should continue playing long balls because Howard scored off one.

This. No way should 4-4-2 ever be shunted after seeing it deployed with Nev and Heitinga centre mid.
 
I wonder if 4-4-2 with players such as Drenthe, Barkley etc would even work. I seriously doubt the techniques and strategies played out on the training pitches, and wonder if Moyes & Round are strangling our creative elements to the point where even the more attack-minded players have become unaccustomed to it.

But, back to last night, 4-4-2 was a refreshing change in formation but to start with Heitinga and Neville in the middle of the park pretty much nulified that formation and reduced us - AGAIN - to lacking any guile going forward.

I've almost run out of bleach now.
 
I run a 3-4-2-1 in video games and it's boss- sent Shrewsbury to the Champions league after three consecutive promotions. I've also been known to run a 3-2-5. MOyLezz ffs.

4-3-3/4-5-1/4-2-3-1 - Whatever you wish to call it....this to me would see us playing better football.

Donovan and Drenthe on the wings supporting whichever Striker, when attacking down the left the right winger comes inside to make it 2 in the box and vice versa. Both able to swap wings if necessary to come inside on their stronger feet, although I prefer a left footed player on the left etc to create that little bit more width.

Osman/Barkley as the creative midfielder, also joining up with the 'lone' Striker to offer support.

Fellaini/Rodwell as the so called defensive Midfielders. Both have a good passing range (especially Fellaini in my opinion) so add the the creative effect in the centre, whilst having the option of covering Donovan or Drenthe if they have stayed upfield.

Defense is as is, because we don't have anything better at this point.

Sell Billy if possible. Ship out Saha. I'd even sell Timmy for a couple of million if we were offered it (regardless of whether the money goes to the bank or Moyes) despite being a legend, you've got to think for today, and he doesn't offer anything anymore. Give Neville his coaching role, but whatever you do, get him off the pitch and out of our midfield.

I, like others, feel Cahill, Saha and Neville are massively in decline as players and don't offer anything that our younger more technical players couldn't offer.

I understand people's frustration that the money from transfers is going to the bank, but at the end of the day, these transfers are keeping us alive as a club and Moyes should take a lot of credit for taking average to good players on a cheap fee and selling them on for millios more than they're worth. Of course, on the flip side, I feel his negative tactics and team selections are having a major impact on confidence throughout the team and it's almost like nobody wants the ball and must get rid as soon as they receive it.

I've written this season off now and accept we're going to be piss poor for the majority of the rest of it. However, if we don't spend a lot in January and still survive in the Premier League I'll be happy knowing we're in a lot better position with the banks/loans, which in turn makes us a better proposition for a buy out (Kenwright dependant) and hopefully we have a god base of youngsters that we can build a side around in the future.

Just my thoughts, sorry to go on!
 

Agree with most of what your saying there ninja.

4-2-3-1 is what we should stick with and work out which players are going to challenge for where. As said ossie should take the ACM at present with Barkley backing up on that possistion. Drenthe and Donovan on the wings with guaye and Coleman backing that up Fellani and Rodwell CM with Cahill and heitinga backing up. Saha up to with anichebe and the rest challenging

I think were making things alot more complicated than needs to be with team selection
 
Formations should be picked based on your attacking personnel. There's nothing wrong with 451, in fact 451 can be very similar to 433 or 4231 depending on the players and how you ask them to play.

Mind you 442 and starting with Neville and Heitinga in centre mid is no advert for 442
 
The starting point for every team selection should be Osman playing in the hole. All the other pieces should fall in around that one certainty. IMO if he played a season there he would score 10+ goals and get 10+ assists. All our best play over the last 2 years has been with him there in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 or whatever you want to call it.
