30 year old players

I'm beginning to hate the term "resale value". Since when did so many fans begin to care about stuff like that ? If we can sign a 30 year old for a sensible fee and pay them sensible wages and in four years time they eithe retire or leave on a free, but they've been boss on the field then I'll be happy. Good players win matches. The more matches we win the more money will come into the club through increased revenue.

To be fair, I'd rather have an equally boss 24 old playing for us to see them improving ( the 30 year old is unlikely to improve ) but they'll be more expensive anyway ... mainly because of that horrible "resale value" thing.

I'm not against that, but in all likelihood the fees we'd fork out for Dempsey and Donovan (for example) probably won't be what I'd consider "sensible".

Fair point mate. Fees of 4 or 5 million are fine, or at least would be if we had any cash. If you get three years out of someone then that's 1.5 million / year which is less than the wages they'll be on ( At, say, 50k / week you're kissing goodbye to 2.5 million / year anyway )

Anything much above that and it gets harder to justify, but most teams rely on a blend of youth and experience to be successful so we shouldn't get too hung up on the age of anyone we sign ... so long as we've got some youth to balance it.

For a club that survives on resale...its pretty important.

To be fair, I think when Moyes buys, he buys with a look of longevity due to how every penny counts with our transfer budget.

He tends to not buy above 27. With the exception of Distin who was a last minute buy and over priced but we needed a left back. The Pienaar situation now is different.

So with that in mind, we won't be buying all of Dempsey, Donovan, and Pienaar in one sitting

I doubt a few 30 year olds will move us to the next level, mate.

I'm assuming that even if we were reckless, we still couldn't afford Zlatan and Pirlo.

You honestly don't think retaining Pienaar then adding Donovan and his 7000 assists, and Dempsey with his 22 goal season would take us to the next level ?

Pienaar + Dempsey + Donovan would have us challenging for the top four imo.

I think they'd improve us a lot but no, I don't believe we'd challenge the top four. I might have believed it a while ago but not these days.

depends on positions and roles really, i.e. goalkeepers obviously can have another 10 years past 30 if they have the hunger, centre backs are likely to be able to adapt better compared to midfielders and wingers and therefore are less risk, but we're looking at two wide players in pienaar and donovan, but i think they've both proved they have a few good years left in them so i am all for these signings at a lowish cost i.e. 5 mill. people who rely on pace i'd be dead against buying, however, distin has had probably his best season since he joined the club and he's a player who relies on his pace as his main asset and is a great example of the changing way of modern football.

Overall, i wouldnt like to see us sign more than two over 30's this summer because we a;ready have enough as it is at the moment, a team like belgium however (i know they cant buy players), but they have a very talented team who probably need a couple of older heads in there to help them achieve the success they should be acheieving. Overall you need players like these and if we had a very youthfull squad i wouldn't mind us buying a few, but IMO we have a little too many old heads in our squad which should be replaced by players like donovan and pienaar rather than used alongside

I don't care about their age to be honest.

If they're quality and can help us win now, then I say sign them up.

Those of us old enough can remember how the signings of Peter Reid and Andy Gray were fundamental in taking us to the next level in the eighties. They weren't 30 at the time but they were in their late 20s and with some injury baggage. At that time it was as big a risk as signing a 30 year old today. And bigger than some of the 30 year olds mentioned
