It works in Ice Hockey and Basketball. It would also stop timewasting to a degree, and all that nonsense about added time.
 
Leave football alone. It's survived for as long as it has without a 30 minute half's and doesn't need them now. This is what happens when middle-class morons start getting involved in the game, they convince themselves that the game needs to "improve" and appeal to a "wider demographic" despite the fact that football is the most popular sport in the world.

I could understand referees stopping the watch for stoppages, much like they do in rugby, but the notion of a 30 minute half seems a bit silly as not all teams seek to time waste and there must be huge variability in terms of ball in play time.

Apparently not. I think it varies by about 5 minutes.
