3 at the back

Fergie wrote that no manager has one particular style but rather manages what he has in order to get the best out of them.

The best example is Pep at Barcelona; Xavi, Iniestra, Messi..No need to do much thinking about tactics there..

In my heart of hearts I knew that Holgate had to play but how if Coleman had to play too? Solution: go with 3 at the back. Coleman bombs up and down the flank all afternoon and Holgate brings speed and a bit of aerial ability to the defense.

Maybe against a packed defense at home you might play an out and out winger but surely the team now has finally got a style, a way of playing that has been lacking all season. And I reckon RK got there by finally picking the best players and letting the formation sort itself out namely no more Jags, Cleverley, The Stek, Miralles on the wing..

When Galloway comes back he can be the left sided equivalent of Holgate. He knows how to be a left back and a centre back. Browning or Pennington as back up to Holgate, Funes Mori as back up to Galloway and then all we need is to find replacement/back up for Williams.

Galloway is behind Funes Mori in the pecking order.

It's just great how we go from a 5-0 hammering using this formation to how it is now. I hope he buys a new cb in this window because there is guarentees that no one gets injured touching wood they don't mind. Holgate still hasn't lost a game in the league that he has started (correct me if I'm wrong). He is better then stones in my opinion I think he is going to be the next star in the national team as well as a few of our younger players future is bright the future is BLUE coyb

Bumping this thread because last match saw us switching between a back 3 and a back 4. While we looked great going forward, I saw a lot of cracks in our defense and if we were playing a better squad I think the outcome would have been much different.

1. I thought defensively with McCarthy Schneiderlin, Barkley and Barry all in the squad we had too many CMs and there was cofusion when we were forced to play defensively. When Bournemouth were on the upswing it was mostly due to everyone dropping deep and being able to win back the ball or link up with Lukaku who became more and more isolated.

2. This also showed up our weakness in our centerbacks when we just play 2. Williams had a poor game and with a back two his lack of pace gets exposed even more. Too many times have we seen strikers abusing the space in the channels and in between the defenders when we have just 2 CBs.

While Bournemouth at home is the right match to experiment and you can chalk up some of the confusion and errors to a lack of comfort and practice in the formation, I still think we need 3 at the back to get the best out of us.

My Starting 11:

Robles
Holgate Willliams Funes Mori
Schneiderlin
Coleman Gueye Barkley Baines
Lookman
Lukaku

In the summer we need to make 4 first team signings;

...........................???

..........Holgate....???.......???

Coleman...Gana...Snides....???

..............Barkley....Lookman

.......................Lukaku

New GK is a must.
Williams is solid but not top notch
Need a big upgrade on Mori
Baines isnt what he was

I'd guess Davies + DCL can compete in the central and attacking midfield slots but we need another player there as well as someone to give Lukaku a breather

The key i think is upgrading in the defensive positions as we now look great in the 1st eleven otherwise.
