3-5-2

not sure i'm reading this right. typically in a 3-5-2 you want your back 3 to be solid centre backs, who will only push up occasionally. baines wouldn't be able to do this, in any 3-5-2 type scenario he would be better suited to play as a midfielder, which nullifies any benefit as far as accomodating more players in midfield goes. believe me, i'd love a way to make use of our many capable midfielders, but i really don't think this is it.

Yeah, with Baines pushed up, we already play three defenders for all intensive purposes.

Good god no! 3 centre backs? Moyes gets enough criticism for being too defensive as it is.

BLS , if it is played right it's not defensive ! I'm more of a 442 man but just discussed this idea in my thread as a way of Moyesie getting his better players on the pitch as well as giving us the option of having to specialised strikers on the pitch...

Johnny , read my tactician thread ... Pretty much the idea I floated the other day . Could work as we have the best wingbacks in the country !!

I missed that thread THT! Great minds, eh? I think if Pienaar goes, this should become reality moving Baines up the pitch. We have the personnel to do this and I think we could be a superb attacking force in this formation.

I've always loved the idea of a 3-5-2, but surely there's a reason teams don't do it, and don't play wingbacks anymore? Surely?

No one plays 3-5-2. And for a reason, it doesn't work.

Remember when Baines played for England, had no cover from Gerrard and had a bit of a stinker? It would be like that constantly. Expecting him to cover the whole left side? Same for Coleman on the right.

It would basically just be 5-3-2. One of our biggest assets is the interplay with the full backs, then releasing them to get a cross in. They would have no wide midfielders to do that with, and would basically have to go alone. And with no covering wide players, they'd get absolutely slaughtered by any wingers.

Then that leaves us very short in attacking areas, basically your 3 midfielders and your 2 stikers. All very narrow, and bleughy.

And with that deficiency, you'd be looking to your centre backs to start attacks from deep. I cant even imagine Jagielka doing anything like that anytime soon.

4-4-2, one step at a time eh?
