They had to abandon a campaign in NZ due to lack of interest....

All Blacks sponsor Telecom has ditched the contentious "Backing Black" abstinence campaign amid international ridicule.

The news comes as Global Saatchi & Saatchi boss Kevin Roberts defended the ads.

The high-profile advertising company was responsible for the concept and delivery of the campaign, which called on All Black fans to abstain from sex during the Rugby World Cup.

Prominent advertising company Saatchi & Saatchi was responsible for Backing Black's concept and delivery.

It was fronted by former All Black captain Sean Fitzpatrick, with All Black coach Graham Henry having earlier been considered to front the campaign.

The nature of the campaign has drawn widespread condemnation, with talkback lines and internet comment boards clogged with fans speaking out, including some who called on Telecom customers to cancel their accounts if the campaign went ahead.

Backing Black was also attacked by rugby fans on its official Facebook page.

The campaign is intended to galvanise support behind the men in black as they chase their first World Cup title in 24 years.

Prime Minister John Key said the campaign was evidence not all advertising dollars were well spent.

"I think it's meant as a light-hearted joke."

There would be several similar sideline issues that arose throughout the World Cup, Mr Key said.

"The reality is when the teams turn up in New Zealand, the focus is hopefully going to be on two things: a great display of rugby and showcasing New Zealand to the rest of the world."

It is understood Backing Black's call for sexual abstinence was set to be launched nationwide on Sunday with simultaneous TV commercials to be broadcast about 8.40pm.

A source said the advertising campaign planned to include posters, billboards and adverts emblazoned on to buses.

During the planning stage of Backing Black, ideas included posters being placed in the urinals of bars and restaurants urging men to "think of your mum in a bikini ... abstain for the All Blacks".

Advertising executives also considered placing cold showers outside popular bars to show that publicans were committed to hosing down anyone tempted to break their vow of chastity.
