Just seen this on the news, Absolutely horrific. Been to the lake part that this happened to for movie nights before. Prayers that the little one is safe although extremely unlikey.

Police are searching for a child who was snatched by an alligator near Disney's Magic Kingdom Park in Florida.

The two-year-old boy was paddling in a foot of water on a beach beside the Seven Seas Lagoon at 9pm when the animal attacked and dragged him away.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said: "The father was there nearby and the alligator came up and attacked. The father struggled and tried to get his son and was not successful and he alerted others nearby to assist him."

The mother also tried to rescue the boy and a nearby lifeguard was told of the attack, Demings said.

"We have in excess of 50 law-enforcement personnel at the scene actively searching the lake," he added.

They're saying that a 2 year old was eaten by an alligator... Jesus.

"As a father and a grandfather, we are hoping for the best in the circumstances but, based upon my 35 years of law enforcement experience, we know we have some challenges ahead of us."

Police have cordoned off the area near the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa while boats and a helicopter search the 14ft-deep man-made lagoon which is bordered by three holiday resorts and sand beaches.

Disney spokeswoman Jacquee Wahaler said everyone at the resort was devastated and that Disney is helping the family.

When asked if the resort was aware of alligators on the property, Ms Wahaler advised there were signs that said "no swimming".

Sheriff Demings said there had been no other recent reports of similar alligator attacks on the lake.

"We have no record of this happening before," he said.

It is not clear if the child's family, who are from Nebraska, were staying at the resort.

Magic Kingdom Park is one of four theme parks in the Walt Disney World Resort.

How the hell did they let an alligator make their home in a man made lagoon with 3 resorts around it with beaches!?!?

Saw this earlier, absolutely horrific.

Also seen that apparently Disney have those sort of areas down as Gator free lakes? Mad if that's true and there's actually Gators in them.

[Poor language removed] will hit the fan over this one. Such a tragedy for that family. can't begin to comprehend what they are going through.

Obviously horrible news to hear.

Seems a massive oversight on the Disneyland runners to even have this issue to begin with, i hope they get pulled for this. You don't expect wild alligators to be in a amusement resort, ridiciously dangerous.

Hope in any capacity they find this child.

While yes, horrible news to hear, I doubt very seriously Disney has the ability or capacity to make areas like that wildlife/alligator free.

You been to Orlando?

I haven't.

But in the case of it being a disney resort, it is the little things that can make a huge difference like in this case.

As much as there might not be a foolproof way to prevent aligators being there (admittedly no idea on that), Disney, being such a massive world wide company should have had some sort of measures in place. Even if it was something simple as something in the water which made it difficult for anything to come ashore like that.

I think anyway, i mean its not butlins, it's disney!

As America seems to be in love with all things Australia at the moment, I wonder if they'll take a leaf out of Warren Entsch's book after a croc attack last month? (I suspect not)

"A 46-year-old woman is feared dead after being attacked by a crocodile while swimming with a friend on a beach in far North Queensland in Australia.
The women, who were not from the area, were reportedly swimming in waist deep water on remote Thornton Beach, in the Daintree National Park in Cairns at about 10.30 p.m. Sunday night (8:30 a.m. ET) when the woman was taken by the crocodile.
North Queensland member for parliament, Warren Entsch, who represents the region, said the victim should be blamed for the attack, not the crocodile.
"You can't legislate against human stupidity," Entsch said on Monday, noting that Thornton Beach lies next to a creek where tourism operators run crocodile-spotting tours.
"This is a tragedy but it was avoidable. You can only get there by ferry, and there are signs there saying watch out for the bloody crocodiles," he added.
"If you go in swimming at 10 o'clock at night, you're going to get consumed."

Oof.

See This is kinda along the lines of what i was meaning to say.

It isn't something that human error can really account for. A family took their child to a disney resort, primarily a place for children to go. As much as it may have been a freak accident that happened, I don't believe it should be glossed over that Disney should have had far more precautions in place.

Same as the zoo has protective measures to prevent accidents happening, such a large company should have safety measures in place at one of their own resorts, even if the likely hood is small.
