Player Valuation: £40m
I was thinking in the shower this morning, "Where have I seen this team before at Goodison" and then I remembered, it was the first team I saw built at Everton. We had:

2 bad goalies - Dai Davies and David Lawson. Both made calamitous errors on a regular basis.
Error prone defenders - Roger Kenyon and Terry Darracott were both prone to some shockers.
Exciting attacking players - Duncan McKenzie, Andy King, Martin Dobson
Prolific striker - Bob Latchford
Nice manager who everyone liked but never quite got the job done - Billy Bingham

Obviously after coming close to a cup in 1977 we sacked Billy and got in Gordon Lee who made us solid but unspectacular (a bit like Davie Moyes I suppose).

So with a bit of luck we are only 7 years (and 2 managers) away from being great again!!

Was Roger still around in 1977?

I am sure Mickey Lyons and Ken McNaught were the centre back pairing in those Cup runs.

And Ken wax inexplicably sold to Villa in the summer.

And Billy was sacked before the Bolton semi final that season.

Gordon took the reins in between the first and second kegs.

I went to that entire LC run in 77, including the Wembley final and both replays. It was utterly heartbreaking and how Lawson let Nichols speculative punt at goal go under him still defies belief...

I like the parallel, but in reality, its a totally different football world now, and there is so much money sloshing around that we can compete with anyone if the perfect storm of a manager with a winning philosophy and mentality has a squad with enough talent to both believe and execute that philosophy. Thats why we are so angry this season (and lets face it, Evertonians are usually a suppportive and stoic collective ) as we see a great opportunity slip away. Come to think of 1977 again, hmmmm......

Could have sworn Roger scored an og in the second replay against Villa? Went to all 3 games but i was only a small boy at the time!

He may have done.....in actual fact that seems to ring a bell.

On the other hand I can see Ken McNaught in the team.

@BlockHead or @Dario Terracotta usually have great recall for these things :)

Lads?

The Wembley Final was a major league snoozefest, the first replay at Hillsborough was a nail-biter of the highest order and the subsequent loss in the second at OT was bitterly, bitterly disappointing as we had been - in my opinion - much the better team in both the replays.

RK was indeed unlucky to concede an oggie and like many others on the night, I was devastated, no actually I was a distraught 21-year old to see that yard dog Chris Nichol deny us a trophy.

Not ashamed to admit I cried all the way walking home - only lived two miles from OT in those days.

Funny to think those days we would sack a manager who got us to a Semi-Final,how times have changed.Nil Santis and all that.

I am trying to come up with what the team might have been in at keast one if those games.

Lawson

Darracott, Lyons, McNaught, Jones

Hamilton, Dobson, Rioch, Goodlass

Pearson, Big Bob

Strangely I have no recollection of Duncan Mac or Andy King starting any of the games in the Villa trilogy.

And Carlisle got in the way of an honour around that time too?
