So you're saying 'can't find a fair contract, remain unemployed'?

It certainly isn't simple.

The theory of trade says that contracts are only accepted if they benefit BOTH PARTIES - that's the point of any trade. Both parties value that which they are receiving greater than that which they are giving up. Tesco value your labour greater than £6.50ph or whatever job is paying, and you value the wages more than relaxing on your butt for an hour.

If you don't think that a dosspot contract is worth what you are giving up to do the job, then don't take it. Like I said, simples.

It really doesn't work like that though.

Working in a fancy resturant (not sure if i am meant to say) the contracts were altogether different.

they employed their staff apart from about 2-3 on temporary contracts. This is so they could offer them work whenever it was suitable to them and leave it for a couple of weeks if need be. It was all above board with tax and whatever but they also paid staff cash in hand at the end of the night which was a bit odd.

The end result of them doing this was when the christmas period was over, myself along with most of their staff didn't receive another call to work there again because they weren't busy.

I've had experience of a zero hour contract contract in the past and it caused me to seek another job. I'd been on a 20 hour a week contract with Showcase Cinemas (the one on the East Lancs) for a year when the new manager come in and decided to drop everyone to zero hours meaning some weeks I'd get my usual 4-5 shifts but others I'd get maybe one or two and in some rare cases none at all. After 6-7 months of this I ended up going back to bingo halls working for what's now called Castle Bingo in Bootle (by the Strand) for 10 months before I went to Uni

Can you imagine a scenario whereby your only means of income was posting on this site. However, the mods can decide when you post and when you do not post, regardless of when and how frequently you wish to post.

Not only that, but you must post when the mods say so in order to retain membership, regardless of whether it is convenient or not for you.

That's what zero hour contracts offer you.....

On the other side of the coin, if you're a good poster and contribute heaps, you will be wanted to post more often.

I'm in the "Zero hour contracts isn't ideal" camp, but you'd think these are beneficial to businesses with a decent employer/employee relationship. If you're a good worker, you'll always be wanted for work, and a good boss will look after you equally as they will want to keep you on.

It's open to exploitation in a bad way though, which I why on the whole it's not ideal.

I'm not sure if you're on a wind up or if you're really that naive.
