£20m the price for Tevez

West Ham have settled with Sheffield United to the tune of £15m over the Carlos Tevez affair. This is added to the £5m fine they received at the time.

We hear a lot about this Carlos Tevez affair, but nothing about Javier Mascherano's. His move to Liverpool was equally has suspect yet that whole farce appears to have been swept under the rug for all eternity.

Javier had moved on in the Jan window. While just as shady a deal, it didn't directly involve Sheff Utd getting relegated. West Ham were in the relegation battle and Tevez was instrumental in getting them results.

Would be nice to see Liverpool taken to task.

Would have been interested though if he was still an hammers player and had played his part in the final two months of their season. No doubt Brian Barrwick's and Rick Parry's influence on the FA would have seen his transfer look a legitimate one, which to this day is still pretty corrupt.

£20m is still a good price for keeping you in the premiership. I feel the authorities really let Sheff Utd down over this, they should have docked West Ham points leading to them getting relegated

Still, us signing Jagielka relied on them going down so while I feel a huge, huge injustice was done, Everton benefitted which is the most important thing in my eyes

At the end of June 2007, Tévez rejected a move to Internazionale, and his agent, Kia Joorabchian, stated that he was in discussions to stay with West Ham, as the player had settled into the Premiership and wanted to remain in England. Tévez replied that he would not make a decision until the Copa América wrapped up in July.

On 5 July, the Daily Mail reported that Tévez had agreed to join Manchester United in a deal worth £20 million, which was subject to an appeal from West Ham; West Ham said in turn that they would block any transfer unless they received a majority of the transfer fee. The next day, West Ham released a statement that Tévez was under contract until June 2010, in addition to denying having held negotiations with any other club. Joorabchian contradicted the claim by saying that West Ham had indeed given permission to United to engage in talks.

Manchester United and West Ham sought FIFA's assistance to rule on Tévez's ownership, but on 24 July, FIFA suggested that the case be referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Joorabchian intervened by issuing West Ham with a High Court writ "...to compel West Ham to release the registration of Carlos Tévez in accordance with contracts entered into between the parties." However, the case never made it to court as the Premier League approved an agreement between West Ham and MSI, in which MSI would pay £2 million to West Ham, who in turn released Tévez from his contract.

Not very up to scratch with world football news.
But what was the Carlos Tevez affair?

West Ham loaned Carlos Tevez & Javier Mascherano at the last minute of the transfer window a season or 2 ago. Both players were partially owned by a 3rd party which is against the rules in British football (& the reason we missed out of Fernandes), Mascherano barely played but Tevez hit brilliant form at the end of the season, giving West Ham the results needed to stay in the league at the expense of Sheffield United.

Sheff Utd obviously complained when this was happening & the authorities bottled out of making a decision & fined West Ham a few million quid at a time when their owner was throwing loads of money about so they were barely punished at all. It's still been ongoing but it's now been settled with West Ham giving compensation to Sheff Utd. The difference between staying up & going down is something like £30m per year though so I think West Ham have got off very, very lightly & it's a disgrace to football the way the whole thing happened

A very welcome sum at the moment. Probably the best they could have realistically hoped for. I'm surprised they didn't try to get any compensation for Mascherano as well, seeing as it wasn't just that last game but the whole seasons influence of the players that can be considered. Mascherano wasn't anywhere near as influential but still.

ah thanks for the replies, makes a whole lot of sense now!
I agree Liverpool definitely shouldn't get off scot free, altho even if they did get a penalty it would be like spare change for them. Glad Sheffield United got something out of it though, even gladder that we did too. (jags :P)

WHU should have been relegated instead but because the FA got their knickers in a twist and took too long to make a decision the new season had already started with WHU in it !!!

whose to say that liverpool's champions league qualification wasn't the result of the mascerano deal, to get away with it absolutely scot-free is absurd.

this is a murky area, dealing with hypotheticals, theres a good chance west ham may have not been relegated even without tevez, but the reason people are suggesting they be docked points is because they made a calculated decision to conduct an illegal transfer, thinking that the benefit outweighs the cost. while the hypothetical in question here is more definitive than the one for liverpool, there is still that doubt, and since they made a decision to break the rules, they should be punished as well.
