Match Thread Everton vs Liverpool Wednesday 24th April

So many of us really do expect so little from this we fail to see the point in even trying. That's what 30 years of failure does to a club I guess. The really sad thing is that this mentality is so difficult to get rid of. Will we ever go into a derby expecting to win in our life times? I doubt it.

Unlike in the 90s, Liverpool have done a great job of raising their game in this fixture since the early 2000s. They're so rarely off it when they play against us. You throw in the fact they're a far better team and it's made for two very painful decades.

I get the sentiment because it's probably where I am too, but it's so depressing to see so many of us just hoping we avoid a hiding. We no longer expect to compete. Just a game to chalk off in the hope we don't seriously embarrass ourselves. Has to be the darkest time in our history.

Nailed on to give away the softest of penalties and everyone will say we can't complain because it went our way at the weekend.

Very likely to be the last Merseyside Derby under the lights at Goodison. Hopefully it can get a performance and atmosphere fitting of the occasion.

    2023/24 Dwight McNeil

Great goal today. He's capable of that but he just isn't capable of doing it consistently. Until he is he's always going to be a player in teams hovering round at the wrong end of the table.

I hold out very little hope of us getting anything but if we do let's hope there's plenty of video reactions of this knocking round afterwards.

I know we are in some state as a club but I don't think we're so low that we just give up even trying against our rivals.

Our players won't want it as much as theirs. They've got a title to play for and with that win today we've probably done enough to survive - especially with Sheffield United still to play at home. Think we'll make it difficult at times in the way a Dyche team often does but nowhere near enough...

    2023/24 Ashley Young

At least two penalties on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for Forest that's the way this league goes. Actually think apart from those incidents Young didn't do too badly today, but he's going to get torn to shreds against Liverpool if he plays. Unlike Forest, they've got the players to exploit...

    2023/24 Sean Dyche

It's clearly not his style to go out of his way to play up to the fans. That's fine but leaves him vulnerable at times like these. I think Lampard got cut a bit of slack because he was good at the old fist pumps.

Best atmosphere at GP you've seen

Outside of the obvious ones I remember when Turner got sent off against a decent Blackburn side and we came through 1-0. Goodison at its incandescent best that day.

I think the biggest thing for me is being at least 3 points ahead of Luton going into that game against them. Knowing that even if the worst happens we have Sheffield United at home the following week to settle the matter is a good insurance policy.

    2023/24 Sean Dyche

It's the go to persona for any struggling manager tbf. Self preservation becomes the order of the day. I think we all knew Dyche was limited but not so limited we'd be on this dismal run. I always thought he'd win often enough to just about to keep the fans onside this season but since...

He is terrible. People saying otherwise have ridiculously low expectations of what a wide attacker should be providing.

    2023/24 Sean Dyche

You're not wrong there. It's just expected and greeted with a shrug of the shoulders or worse still a rallying cry a few days after from a player that hasn't done anything all season.

    2023/24 Kevin Thelwell

I think Young was a Dyche signing. Thelwell should've been strong enough to tell him to pack it in and give someone from the academy a chance. Absolutely nothing to be gained from having a 38 year old plodding down the line in the Premier League.

Had to laugh when they were going over the Arsenal game and he couldn't recognise that they were at home. Wish him all the best but it's very clear his days at the top level are done. Cue a new contract offer from us.
