You also see people claiming that he will be world class, which is equally absurd. This country is far too insular when it comes to football, so our young players get massively over-hyped because we don't have a decent handle on what other talent there is out there.

Because I follow England and English youth rather than Everton. I rate Barkley, but much of the hype is absurd and unhelpful.

It probably isn't though, not unless we define his generation very narrowly, and limit it to English payers only. We massively overrated our players in this country, even more so when they're from a club we support.
