Yup, tonight is a more significant game than some might think, in my view. Part of the transition from "crisis-club Everton" to "attractive project Everton" will involve a move from throwing League Cup and FA Cup fixtures to prioritise Premier League points to attacking both cups whilst building a squad that can compete in the league. If we're going to evolve as a club in our current state, games like this need to be won, the recent past has to be irrelevant
In the last 30 years, we have been a club that couldn't really afford to go all-in on cups without worrying about fall-out in the league. Even when Moyes had us in Europe, there was a sense that we didn't always want to stay too long in Europe if it meant losing ground in the league - though he rarely took it as far as Martin O'Neill did when at Villa.
This was largely a function of underinvestment. Kenwright was unable to fund the squad needed and unwilling to hand over the train set, so the manager was left with a side good enough to compete for European places in the league providing it wasn't stratched too much by domestic and European cup competitions. Our heart - as a club - just wasn't in "competing."
That has to change now we have custodians who can fund us competently and build a squad. I don't expect miracles in the league this season - but I do expect us to start changing the old mentality about the cups. We need to see them as competitions worth competing in. If we drop a few places in the league as a result, that's a message to the owners to keep funding a better squad. That message was pointless with Kenwright. He wouldn't and couldn't.
I hope Moyes attacks this tonight. If he does, he's adapting to changed circumstances. If he doesn't, he's a dinosaur.
