If we're going to evolve as a club in our current state, games like this need to be won, the recent past has to be irrelevant
Yup, tonight is a more significant game than some might think, in my view. Part of the transition from "crisis-club Everton" to "attractive project Everton" will involve a move from throwing League Cup and FA Cup fixtures to prioritise Premier League points to attacking both cups whilst building a squad that can compete in the league.

In the last 30 years, we have been a club that couldn't really afford to go all-in on cups without worrying about fall-out in the league. Even when Moyes had us in Europe, there was a sense that we didn't always want to stay too long in Europe if it meant losing ground in the league - though he rarely took it as far as Martin O'Neill did when at Villa.

This was largely a function of underinvestment. Kenwright was unable to fund the squad needed and unwilling to hand over the train set, so the manager was left with a side good enough to compete for European places in the league providing it wasn't stratched too much by domestic and European cup competitions. Our heart - as a club - just wasn't in "competing."

That has to change now we have custodians who can fund us competently and build a squad. I don't expect miracles in the league this season - but I do expect us to start changing the old mentality about the cups. We need to see them as competitions worth competing in. If we drop a few places in the league as a result, that's a message to the owners to keep funding a better squad. That message was pointless with Kenwright. He wouldn't and couldn't.

I hope Moyes attacks this tonight. If he does, he's adapting to changed circumstances. If he doesn't, he's a dinosaur.

Left back will be interesting. Mykolenko could probably do with sitting this out and I think Garner is needed in midfield.

Does Moyes have any trust in Aznou? Could it be Patterson, Coleman or even McNeil?
You've hit the nail on the head.

Of all our players Mykolenko is coming back from injury and we need to be careful not to overload him.

I think Moyes needs to be brave and play Aznou . He can't be that bad if we paid £7 million for him as a specialist left back can he?

Can’t decide on the team. Normally would say go ultra strong then take them off, rather than start weak and makes subs if we go behind. But we have some players that are desperate for minutes to start their Everton careers. Probably has to take priority tonight. They all need to perform though.

The amount of confidence on this forum makes me see no other result than a Home win.

You people have changed man.

Every single top club treats these cups like nothing until they are in a semi final because their reserves are better than the first teams of every club save for 6 or 7. The reality is we need to be able to not give one about this match and win it anyway. That’s progress.

He’s always attacked it, it’s just the squads may not have enabled it, he’s had to juggle Europe in the past too.

I want a full strength team tonight and I think he will, I can see a couple of changes which will be determined by injury/fitness.

The truth is It won’t come down to 10 of the players on the pitch if we win or not, It will be determined by Beto or Barry. The likes of Ndiaye and Grealish must struggle to keep going with them upfront.
