2025/26 David Moyes

….surely time for a change;

An indictment, really. And we can't say he always took crap sides to these places either. He took plenty of top seven sides to those places in that time. Unfortunately, this is the kind of thing that undermines an otherwise highly competent manager. It shows he has a ceiling - and one that would appear to be somewhat self-installed. Inferior managers to him - i.e., most managers in the game - have managed the odd win at these places given fewer matches.

2 of their players cost more than our first team will tomorrow, but no, if we get beat it will due to Moyes talking us down in the presser.

I don't recall us being title challengers ever under Moyes.

Iceland, summer 2017. £45m
Dibling, summer 2025. £32m up to £40.5m
Onana, summer 2022 & Richarlison summer 2018. ~ £35m
Lukaku, summer 2014. £28m

Our top 5 most expensive signings run back beyond a decade. There's been a perfect storm once, Ranieri's leicester in 2015-16. They've been relegated twice since.
Moyes has taken plenty of top seven sides to those places in that time. Law of averages demand at least the odd win. To go as long as he has without a single win at these grounds is a disgrace and unworthy of a man of his competence.

This is my issue with Moyes. I always feel he knows his place.

He's better than that. This is a scar on his record.

Always gets spun that way but actually 13 times losing 6 means he’s drawn 7 at Anfield. That means more often than not Liverpool don’t win at home against what have been inferior Everton teams.

Compare that to Bournemouth who have lost 14 of the last 15 home and away against that lot. There’ll be other teams with similar trash records there.
He's a very competent manager. But given this - and his respectable record of avoiding defeat more than not - surely he could turn one of those draws into a win. Until he does, there will always be a sense that he's solid as a rock but lacks that inspirational gamble that earns glory rather than obduracy. Basically, we are crying out for a touch of fantasy amidst the stolid competence. Enter Jack Grealish...

I thought I'd framed it such that at least someone would have pounced on 3 of the 5 having been sold on for significant profit, one that needed a semi legal induced football break and such walked on a free (and was instrumental in helping toward our psr issue - kept being paid though, the old scamp...*), and the other only signed 4 weeks ago after wrangling over the sell on clause.

The Moyes mkI term was a succession of having his best players (granted none in the 5) moved on from his sides. When he finally got the ice cool finisher, he decided to go awol on international duty then came back and ruptured his achillies and was never the same player again. Was never afforded enough of the right players in the same side. MkII is looking better, and he's had one proper summer window to right the wrongs of previous managerial misappointments.

…I think that assessment is fair.

Martyn
Coleman Jagielka Lescott Baines
Kanchelskis Arteta Fellaini Pienaar
Cahill
Yakubu

I swap Kancho for Grealish, that's the fantasy element for me, Moyes signed the other ten, but rarely if ever had them all at the same time.
None of this versatility rubbish, give him the players for the roles he defines and judge his sides on what they can do.
