The 20th World Athletics Championships. Tokyo 13th-21st September

I actually thought before hand Jake Wightman would win it, tactically the best at reading the field, nothing to lose given his injuries. He got it all right from his perspective, just beaten by a man finishing faster. His injuries may mean he still has two years to the next World Champs in him , Olympics may be a push for him though.

this ladies steeplechase final is like the opening of saving private ryan...
Some absolutely horrible hurdling techniques on display , and clearing the water barriers in one leap is just too tiring not only in the leap but the momentum you lose on landing ……says the man who did a steeplechase once by leaping onto all the barriers and tottering off the other side. Never again, toughest thing I’ve ever run, so kudos to them all, poor techniques or not.

missed the mens.

Ok, seems it was in the prelims, but got up and still qualified. Geordie Beamish? Sounds like a pseudonym used by Luca Chianti, investigative journalist.

Still a long way to go in a tough race, but I believe she can win. Indeed, she makes it look effortless like Bolt did previously or maybe Warner in the men's 400 (who had a similar, very relaxed form, if I remember correctly).
She will win easily, it’ll be a procession.

She could probably win the 200, 800 and the 400H if she wanted to as well.

She’s ridiculous.

Thought Wightman could have won gold if he hadn't have been running and looking at the stadium screen. It obviously led to him tightening up a bit looking at the fast finishing Portuguese runner Nader.

I agree. The stadium screen seems to have become part of the athletes' armoury. They should turn it off before the race.
Or blindfold the runners.

It's denied him a gold medal. I'm convinced of that. He's only got himself to blame. If he'd have got his head down and neck out and kept pumping his legs for the line he'd have won. His looking up at the screen tied him up.

Nader finished faster, by some measure, Wightman it was suggested had not had the ideal preparation for the contest and needed an extra 2 month fitness build up to be at peak stamina condition. Blame the screens, the wind, the crowd, the stewards, anything you like. He didn't have it in the tank when he needed it. That's sport.

It's also sport psychology that you dont get caught up in your opponents' races - you do your job and that alone.

Last 10 metres there was no more tactics involved, it was a sprint to the line, and Wightman lost it by a neck because he started tying up looking at what the fast finishing Nader was doing.
