2025/26 Dwight McNeil

I like him, he's different and drifts around finding pockets and decent crosses.

He's not a tracking back, type.

- VS Villa, I thought he could've come on for Jack with Alcaraz coming in centrally for KDH to mix things up.
- We could've gone three at the back to make room for Dibling too.

villa had one shot on target.

I feel McNeil's an option to freshen that up, but will Moyes play him?

I feel there will be umpteen games this season where Moyes' caution means we stick, rather than 'twist' and McNeil will lose game time.

Grealish was more or less unplayable, everything we created came through him

to sub him for mcneil wouldve been the biggest boo since Hibbert came on for Fernandes against Spurs in 2008

0-0 versus 1-shot Villa, at home.

To not try subs and formation change (which is where McNeil can add impact, he struggles physically with a full-throttle 90 mins) is a missed opportunity.

I'm not suggesting Jack isn't great. Jcak is great, could've come centrally and Mcneil come on for KDH. Playing 3 at the back brings would've made room for Dibling too - and suddenly there's runners and fresh legs everywhere, running at 1-shot Aston Villa.

Relying solely on Jack for creativity risks us being predictable, reduces strength / quality of game time in others, reduces team's effectiveness should Jack not be around for a game or two (silly yellow at the weekend).

The wider point is around use of subs in general. Now that you can use loads in a game, I see a point in tasking some players with expending high energy for 55-60 minutes with a planned substitution and fresh legs at around that time. Together with tactical subs, this could be especially effective when you have a strong bench, as we do now. Might not have worked so well for us in the last few years.

True. This is exactly what we can do now

i get your point for sure

i just think mcneil is such a downgrade on jack, though he does offer something different in set pieces and long range shooting

if anyone was to be brought on from an attacking sense i would say Dibling and Alcaraz have leapfrogged McNeil, though they all offer something a bit different so it can be horses for courses

in that scenario i would have perhaps looked at him coming on for garner to dovetail with grealish, but would have been a big risk defensively against Elliot and the other lad they brought on whos name i can’t remember but he was fast
