1. Churchill's quote from August 1940

2 Pre-Battle of Britain Hurricanes Mk 1

3 An excellent book. I met Dr. Alfred Price (RIP) and we had a great chat about the BoB.

Did you know that 15th September 1940 was nowhere the day of the heaviest fighting. It was the day chosen to commemorate the Battle by us many years later, as following that day, the threat of invasion had gone.

Was under the impression it was the day bomber command realised the tide had turned and the luftwaffe had been backed off through their sheer numbers lost, they simply couldn't continue to lose planes like they had. Britains air superiority of it's own skies had prevailed.

There were 18 other days in the Battle of Britain when Fighter Command's commitment was greater in terms of sorties and patrols.

There were many Luftwaffe bomber units not commited at all on 15th September: KG 2; KG 4; KG 51; KG 54 & LG 1.

However it is considered that the Germans did not realise that they were up against the greatest combined defence system at that time in the world.

How did the luftwaffe get on vs the russian equivalent?
The main unit deployed at the start of the war against Russia was the fighter-bomber unit Schnellkampfgeschwader 210 (Fast bomber wing 210), whose remit was to go after ground targets such as airfields, tanks, artillery, enemy troop concentrations, so they were not committed to combat, unless attacked by Russian fighters. Consequently, victories were few. Main combat in fighter v. fighter was conducted by the Messerschmitt 109 units.
