The 20th World Athletics Championships. Tokyo 13th-21st September

Scottish middle distance running continues its “ Golden era” with Kerr, Wightman and Gourley reaching the 1500 m final, with Kerr and Wightman right there in the mix for medals. It was an interesting comment from Kerr, who lead all the way, not seeing another runner, the stadium screens were showing the pole vault / hammer so he didn’t get the usual perspective going down the straights.

Escaping attention was a fantastic run from young Inverness runner Megan Keith to finish 10th in the Women’s 10km race. Ten years or so ago she was appearing at the same local cross country and Orienteering events as me , it’s nice to see these youngsters coming through, she’s had very good performances at European u23 level so lots of potential still to come.

Up to now this has been a terribly disappointing showing from GB athletes with many underperforming.

Hopefully our very real medal hopes can see us to at least 3 golds….Hodgkinson, Kerr maybe Burgin and possibly a surprise from one of our relay teams. I’m not quite writing MHS or Dobson off just yet either.

The 10000m brought a smile to my face with Jimmy Gressier of France a surprise winner but someone who’s progressed well over the years. The Steeplechase had a strange last 50 m, El Bakkali looked to have it won but bizarrely slowed , you could see the lift disappeared from his legs , he was hardly kicking up , that’s the way I run. Then Beamish from New Zealand stormed past him to win Gold and their first ever track title at the World Championships.
