The Oldies Thread

Remember spending hours playing in old empty houses which were waiting to be knocked down. I used to get my Mom's cleaning clothes and go and wipe the kitchen down šŸ˜†, occasionally you would be surprised by an old Tramp sleeping rough.

….similar in Everton, Sue, except the derilict houses were called ā€˜bombies’, probably a reference to the Liverpool WW2 blitz. We spend lots of the day in the ā€˜bombies’, knocking holes through the attic walls to connect them and often just lying on the old slate roofs.

Nobody thought anything of it, imagine letting your kids do that these days

Grew up on a 'new' council estate. ours was one of the first few houses built so the giant building site around us was our playground. frightening to look back now but recall jumping off 3 story flats into a huge pile of sand and taking a swim in foundation trenches filled in by the rain. Became quite an expert on scaffolding aged 8.Happier times.

Speaking of Blue Peter, still want to know the identity of the presenter who a young cameraman gave a lift home to, she invited him in for coffee, he accepted, she went to get the coffee and walked back in naked. He ran for it! Then made the mistake of telling a colleague so all of TVC found out.

Yes Bonfires we made our own massive & at the base under it we made a den - branches gained form a local wood a few miles away - & every old house in the neighbourhood - asked any old furniture for the bomb fire - we got loads - probably worth a fortune on bargain hunt now all went up in smoke - & a penny for the Guy -

Never be allowed today - fireworks before Bonfire night sold - ripraps let off in a big bus queue - & those who never donated for a penny for the guy a 3d Paynes Cannon Banger fire work dropped lit into their empty milk bottle to see it blow up on the doorstep - most Bangers were an old penny - the guy in the shop sold them to the eldest lad we used -

Plus he had a firework club - you saved up each week out of your pocket money - then a week before you would go up with your Dad with a biscuit tin & pick your mix -It was a massive event back then - H&S would never allow that now - even back then Rip raps were banned eventually :D

You need a card now in some places to go too the toilet. Even the little children's rides at shopping centres. Nuts! You will need a card soon to feed the ducks!
I was talking to a member of staff in The Range a few weeks ago and he told me that they were planning to go cashless in the near future. Still not convinced that it will work without losing some trade.
