Future recruitment team & strategy

Merlín mentioned that we were keeping tabs on him for over a year and it got me thinking that this transfer window still had the fingerprints of red Kev all over it. (and I think he was very effective with limited resources and did us great service)

One of the new guys involved in recruitment (not sure his name but think he was ex-City) was on gardening leave all summer and didn't/ couldn't contribute.

Think I read somewhere too that the Friedkin's bought a data analytics company on football performance.

Having worked in executive recruitment, I'm surprised we didn't go after some of the crew from Brighton or Bournemouth as they have not had a Petro State backing them and have been very creative in identifying emerging talent globally years ahead of the competition and flipping them for huge profits.

So what should we be expecting from our new recruitment team?

Interesting this...which means he would have been a Thelwell & Purdy recruitment.

Interesting that we've followed up our interest even after they've left.

The team that was working below Purdy are largely still all intact, so the work on targets etc that was done under Purdy and Thelwell is all still our intellectual property

It shouldn't be any surprise that we've gone after targets that we've been monitoring for some time.

Aznou and Barry have been on our radar for longer than Moyes has been back here.

We've employed a new data specialist, which is great, but that won't be solely used for recruitment. I'd expect that will help us with our own player development and performance analysis as well.

We might see a change of approach etc under the new recruitment management, but I think it's worth pointing out that the previous team had identified lots of good players, they just rarely had the money to get them.

We just need to get rid of the premier league experience mindset, that’s all.

In fairness we’ve had good buys from inside and outside the PL

Lukaku Richarlison Pickford Gueye Tarkwoski Gareth Barry McCarthy all had PL experience and turned out to be very good players for us. Can even go further back to Baines Jagielka Yakubu etc.

Even now Grealish Ndiaye KDH are lighting it up all with PL experience, there’s Dibling to come who I’m sure will also make his mark.

It’s not a prerequisite, and we’ve had several good buys from outside the PL with no PL experience, but I also think we shouldn’t discount it.

It’s more about the quality of the player, regardless if they’re from the PL or not.

What’s telling this window is we picked up Barry Aznou Rohl when I’m sure Moyes could have packed the squad with PL experience like Antonio Soucek Vardy Coufal Brownhill Longstaff etc. if he’d have wanted to.

Identifying good players is half the battle. Holding onto talent and having time to build around them is the other half.

We have suffered for decades with holding onto talent. It’s resulted in patchwork squads that cannot kick on.

The first full window was important because we had few players and a bad core of attackers.

The second window will be more important because it will tell us what sort of ambition we can expect from the club.

I blame the American fantasy football boom for all this "data" 💩.

Red Kev?

The fella who got us NDiaye?

If it was "following up" on it, wed have signed Tom Fellows.

Perhaps, hes a decent player who Thelwell and the new hierarchy like.
