Running

I use Strava for tracking and it does some things well, but have never found it to be a useful training log. Or maybe I'm doing it wrong, but it seems too difficult to look back and see what worked and what did not. But then, maybe those days are over; your watch and Strava can give "feedback" on your training, telling you when to rest and suggesting workouts. Maybe that's not terrible, but it seems qualitatively different from the way running logs used to work, at least as I recall them.
Strava for me is just a social network for runners, where I can see what my running mates are up to. I use my Garmin watch and Connect as my main look up/analyse data. Plus I’m really old school and for the last 8 years or so have been writing details in a Running log my Mrs buys me every Christmas for the new year!

Ran the 10k race in that heat yesterday. It was nothing short of awful. Got to 5km and realised my isotonic drink had popped out of my flip belt leaving me 2km short of a drink station and dry. So did what any of us would do. I threw a hissy fit internally, worked myself up to high doe and wrecked my pace.

Got a drink at 7km and walked/ran until my wife caught me up at 9km then finished the race with her. A personal worst but a cracking medal. Thats the positive I'm taking anyway.

Next up for me is the Rathin Run on Saturday 23rd.

Rathin Island is an L shaped Island at the very top of Northern Ireland. It is connected to the mainland by ferry only and is hilly. There are two races, 5km and 10 miles. I've opted for the 5k, the wife 10 miles.

Raitlin run done. For the amount of hills I was pleased with my time. Mrs P ran the 10mile race and was 12mins faster than last year so she was over the moon.

She had found us a cracking wee AirBnB with a hottub to recuperate. This is now an essensial in any running road tripIMG_0975.webp

Had my first run in a long time on Thursday, hadn’t run since I had a fall on a mountain over a year ago, didn’t run far or break any time records but just that 10-15 minutes running made me feel great. Just been out on my road bike this morning too for the first time in a long time, might try a triathlon next week 😂

Really missing getting out for a run. Snapped my Achilles last month and just sat at home with a big boot on. Got another two months doing sod all before starting physio. Going to be a long time before I run again. Doing pull ups and dips and leg raises on my lads power tower thing in the garden is the only way to get my heart rate up. I’m so bored I’m actually on series 8 of Trucking Hell.

Keep at it mate and stay positive. Health wise ive has a terrible 12-18 months and not been able to do anything…. My first run the other day I averaged about 12 minutes per mile and staggered and struggled to complete 2 miles, my quads were on fire, I felt heavy and plodding rather than light and floating and for 2 days after my legs have felt dead … but I know if I keep at it the miles will come, the times will lessen and the muscles will start to build again. Couple of years ago I rode 100 miles in a few hours without any training …. This morning my quads felt like they were gonna pop going up my first incline, again though, I know my legs are really week at the moment compared to what they were, visually i can see I’ve lost a lot of upper leg muscle and tone and today I could really feel it, but again I know in a few weeks time things wil improve… just gotta push through the early barriers. You’ll soon be back mate 👍

Great to hear you’re back out doing a bit.

Only in England, could a trail race start next to a game of cricket 😂

@Simo did you do the Keswick 15K today ?

I entered last minute and paid on the day, as they were trialling it.

Very very wet and boggy higher up, which was a bit of surprise considering how dry it’s been this Summer !

Ah man, that has made me feel slightly jealous 😀.
I had entered but deferred a month ago, not for any real good reason other than would've had to take daughter out of school to make the trip worthwhile. It's a 4.5+ hour trip up. Would've stayed overnight tonight but we always like to use a day for a walk.
I've deferred it to next year (when the date comes out).

Does look very scenic. Deffo would've watched the cricket instead though lol.

Howd you go?

It was much hillier than I expected - a bit of road, 4 miles up, 4 miles down and a bit more road.

Hit my target time of under two hours which I was very happy with considering how boggy it was at the top.

I did the challenge and the lad who won the race, flew past us at around 10K, even though we had a 15min head start.

He did it in 1.01 which is nothing short of astounding given the terrain, the inclines, but more so the downhills ( steep, treacherous and wet )

Ran to all 3 of our stadiums today, picked the worst route possible and went to BMD first then up hill basically to Anfield then Goodison and home, if I do it again I'll deffo have to do Goodison, Anfield, then down hill to BMD as I was done in haha
How far was that, sounds like fun!?
