The construction of Anfield stadium back in 1878. Everton later moved to Goodison Park in 1892.
I read our players & supporters did the majority of the work to all muck in & build the initial stadium - John Holdings pub was the dressing rooms nearby The Standon ? -
As the attendances grew - Sir John the big brewery magnet in the area got greedy - all the food & ales sales went up for him immensely The EFC board paid the rent & kept the gate money -
He reacted by gazumping the rent hike about 500% at Anfield - our home ground - Dr Baxter plus others rebelled , but Holding thought he was holding all the cards - But in several EGMs in a Liverpool library in that area - Dr Baxter persuaded the Board of EFC to move to a piece of land over the other side of of Stanley park - a redundant Market Garden called Mere Green to build the best stadia & he plus others had the finance to do it interest free -
The vote went against Sir John Holding - who was so annoyed - He started another Club - he tried to challenge the EFC name belonged to him - The FA stepped in & overruled him -
He even robbed us of some of our team players by offering higher wages - to no a vail as they stayed in a lower league-
It was ages before the teams played the first Derby - as the started in a lower league below - we beat them easy as attendances at Goodison Park were enormous compared to his offspring club now known as LFC ...
Yes they really were the afterbirth -
Goodison Park just grew & grew Grandstands wise - England games were performed there - FA CUP semi final & replays etc our first Sponsors were Bovril Ltd -
In the 1950s & early 1960s Anfield nickname was The Pit compared to our magnificent stadium - they played in the lower division from 1954 - to 1964 -
The rest is history as they say ......
BMD is fitting that we are in Liverpool on the banks of the Royal Blue Mersey in what looks like a fantastic Stadia - onwards & upwards
