Watches

Alright watch experts, it’s my 50th birthday next month and I’ve decided I’m going to treat myself to a nice watch to mark the occasion…. Trouble is I am clueless about watches. I’ve been doing a bit of searching for different styles etc and have decided I’d like a nice, eye catching dressy watch…. I have however decided I’m not really a fan of Breitling, undoubtedly they are a very good watch but, and this is just personal preference, they all seem to a little bit too busy on the face. Any suggestions or pointers I should be looking out for ? I don’t want to be spending thousands of pounds but I don’t mind a decent outlay for something special.

I'm not sure your budget but I would definitely look into Christopher Ward watches, as the owners are massive blues and they sponsor the club, and they also happen to make really nice watches! Most of their watches run about 1K, so not cheap, but they are really nice!

A few of my favorites are "The Twelve" (many variations, this is the 40mm size in white and blue--I wouldn't go with the 36mm size as that would probably be too small for you).

They also make nice dive watches: Different dial colors and case sizes (38, 40, 42) available.

I've been eyeing this one for awhile, but it's 2K (due to it's all titanium), so out of my reach unless I sell one of my watches to fund its purchase:

Really depends on your budget and outlook on holding / going up in value or if you are happy with a bit (or a lot) of depreciation.

Also if you are prepared to go used or want brand new from an authorised dealer.

And finally do you prefer a dress style or a sports style?

If you’ve looked (and dismissed) Brietling I’m assuming your budget is >£5k?

Im a fan of Rolex and Tudor but appreciate they’re not to everyone’s taste.
Something like this is classic and bridges smart and casual and I assume has reasonable availability, will also retain a large amount of its cost.

Or for something a bit more complicated and / or sporty

For more of a ‘value proposition’ I’ve always liked Unimatic which are quite contemporary looking

Christopher Ward do some interesting one’s as posted previously although personally I only really like their chiming one (for the movement) and this recently released 6.6mm thick one.

5k is a bit over my budget to be honest, I used Breitling loosely really as a lot of their watches I’d seen seemed to have a lot going on on the dial, I do know however that they make some fantastic watches. I’m looking at spending about 2k … but could stretch that for the right watch. As I say, I’m not a collector or an expert at all, I just wanted a nice watch for my birthday which when I pop my clogs I could leave it to my daughter as a keepsake

Was going to suggest having a look on watch finder to pick up a 36mm Rolex below list as not only can you leave it would be wearable too rather than just a keepsake, however just checked and they’re still £5k even for 5-10 year old ones.

Regardless of what you go for, bear in mind most home insurance only covers individual valuables up to £2k so make sure what ever you do get is covered inside and outside the home!

I’m moving away from Apple and really attached to my Apple Watch for fitness.

What’s the alternative to pair with a pixel watch? (Not really into the pixel watch, though - they are hideous)

@kurt a dressy watch without costing a fortune:

I kind of get the feeling you want a high end brand though.
Hi mate, not really fussed on the make tbh, just something that looks and feels good when worn.

I'd suggest you go spend a day or two looking at some in the flesh and trying them on,

I have a breitling and as you say, it's a busy face but the green on it is stunning but it's a big watch. They do a simpler faced version too. I wouldn't have anything smaller.

My other nice one is a deepsea which is even bigger/heavier/more expensive but the step up in quality is evident.

My mate at work has a Rolex datejust and it is stunning. He's skinnier than me so a diver's watch would look odd on him. Not a huge amount more than your budget but a watch to keep/last for life, and to pass on to a favourite child.

other brands such as Seiko and Tudor are also fantastic value and lovely watches.
