Other than getting them into the next round there is no reason whatsoever for this rule, It's not fixing any fixture congestion as they will be playing anyway... Other than handing them an easier game to win it's not doing anything.

The media is once again in control of England selection after years of Southgate picking all the ‘wrong’ players and delivering two finals and a semi final finish.

They’ve got their captain of captains back, they’ve got Branthwaite moving to a top 6 team if he wants to ever get in the squad, and now Alexander Arnold isn’t at Liverpool it sells more clicks if he’s excluded too. If they could just find a way of getting Pickford out the 11 and maybe get Tuchel to take Ngumoha the World Cup for no reason whatsoever then they’ll have their perfect squad which will probably go out in the first knockout round. Then they can get Tuchel fired and start pressuring the next manager.

Yet the biggest most predominating story lines throughout his tenure were:

Should Ramsdale/Pope/Butland be number 1 instead of Pickford (despite being England’s best goalkeeper for decades and their best player in every tournament under Southgate)

Why isn’t Trent starting for England? Literally would any other nation’s media
have been so bothered about a right back not starting ahead of one as good as Kyle Walker?

The media campaign against Pickford was/is shocking and I sadly think they’ll get their way but I think it was less down to pro-Liverpool bias in the media and more a result of the anti-Everton sentiment in general that permeates media spaces
