An interesting question of which I didn't know the answer to and thus sent me to google. Apparently, the difference is that many flies will lay eggs in dead animals and their larvae (maggots) will eat the dead flesh, but there are only a few flies that will lay eggs in living tissues and whose larvae will eat living tissue. I guess this issue for ranchers is that if their cow or goat gets a small abrasion on their leg (and this goes unnoticed and they otherwise seem fine), they are susceptible to these flies laying eggs in that wound and the larvae will hatch and eat inward creating a lethal condition.don't all flies eat flesh?
