Doctor Who?

Is there a Doctor Who fan base here? Is it something that gets discussed, or are people kind of over the show by now?

I became a HUGE Doctor Who fan starting about 8 months before the 50th anniversary. I've only seen the episodes since Eccleston, and though I tried, I could never get past 3 episodes of Jodie (though I do not blame her for the dumpster fire that was.)

Is this topic okay for here, or shall I kindly shove off with it?

Might be worth a shot in the tv thread.

I have to ask, in the nicest possible way of course, you have recently gotten into church, Everton and Dr who. Have you had a major midlife alteration of sorts that has been the spur for these branched interests?

Lol no. Church I started at the start of 2024 because of going to a Christmas party at a church and liking the idea of finding that community. Everton I started by accident after deciding to give soccer a try based off of a video I saw last year where someone was explaining the English Premier League. I found it vastly interesting. Doctor Who I got hooked in on 2013 after YEARS of a friend telling me to watch it.

Personally loved the run from Eccleston through to the end of Smith. Capaldi's run was decent but a step down. Whittaker's run was naff. Wrote it off really but happened to catch an episode of Gatwa's and thought it was decent so watched his first season. Felt a bit half baked with some decent episodes, a step up but not the heights of the earlier stuff.

Ahem, I mean, NERD.

Big fan when I was a kid ; Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker were my favourites. Very bad special effects, good plots that were easy to follow and myriad monsters with plastic moulded features. Used to buy all the novelisations.

People nowadays forget that it's a show for kids, yet you get a load of middle -aged gammons frothing at mouth, complaining about 'woke' nonsense.

Getting proper 'ring' vibes here. This video, from whom? Was it a vhs or betamax? I was put through dr who a long time ago as a kid and I didn't like davros or the daleks so never went back. Strangely enough, I was also put through church by the same grandparent a long time ago, and would you believe I didn't like it so similarly I never went back. Everton was something I drifted from and missed some happier days and came back a bit later.

More fool me.

I am one of the few people I've talked to who actually prefers Capaldi's doctor over Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith. It's practically a four-way tie, but Capaldi has the edge when it comes to character arc, Smith is in a close second thanks to the Amy/Rory/Doctor/River dynamic, plus decent closes to story threads. I loved Eccleston but wish we had more of him. Tennant's Doctor is a bit too human. Jodi's era is just terrible from top to bottom.

Gatwa had a couple of good sparks, but for the most part it felt a lot like we were meant to learn a lesson about the real world. Also, not enough episodes, and it felt like they forgot how they wanted each companion's story to be told by the end. It felt rushed.

It's a guy on Tiktok. I think the account is called Sportsball? He explains sports and aspects of sports using colored pencil drawings and charts. It's pretty interesting.
