Carabao Cup 2025/26

I'd like to win a trophy but genuinely couldn't care less about this.

Forgot Newcastle won it and the fact city won it like 5 times in a row or something shows most teams aren't bothered.

A chance to end our long trophy drought, a day out to Wembley and a place in Europe is why we need to take this seriously. That said it is a competition we appear utterly jinxed in. Even the likes of Swindon, Oxford and Swansea have won it yet we've not had a sniff.

I've said for years it sums up our relationship with this trophy that in the 84-85 season when we were arguably the best side in Europe, we still managed to get knocked out of it by Grimsby...at home!

What a night that was, one of the most one sided games you'd ever see. They had a goalie called Nigel Batch who was like Lev Yashin and Big Nev rolled into one that evening. To be fair to Grimsby, they were a fairly competent second division side back then, if the play offs had been introduced a couple of seasons earlier, we might well have been playing them in Division One that season, they'd finished in the top 5 the season before.

And then we signed Paul Wilkinson who scored the winner for Grimsby.
