Best time of the year to see them, as they all gather together, getting ready to emigrate.

Their seems to be a drop off in numbers in certain areas though.

We used to have pairs that hunted on the fields by me, one pair used to nest on the porch light of a neighbours house, I haven`t seen a single one this year

I`ve signed up to run in a race there next year, having never been to the area.

Is it a mix of woods / moorland ?

Yes it is, there's also a bit of it has man made tracks (stone surface) for cyclists. Nice little place but £6 for the car park all day, robbing bar stewards.
The walk along the river is nice, not sure if you will run that.
