I feel like a battered husband, yet to escape the abusive claws of Everton football club.
I know it’s a distasteful analogy but I’ve used it so many times .

Being an Evertonian is absolutely akin to being in an abusive relationship . At my age I can remember the good times but it’s been almost exclusively pain since . I constantly think they’ve changed , they promise they have and even though everyone tells me they’ll never change I think that they’ve turned the corner they never have . Even My more recent ‘happy ‘ memories are momentary and stand out as flashes of joy in the stark and painful years between them . We celebrate things people in normal relationships see as the minimum expectation, we get so happy others can’t understand but they’ve not lived through the pain.

Those moments of joy though , we celebrate them like they’re the last time we may ever smile because we worry they are but boy do we celebrate .

So I agree with this but additionally I’ve also grown to hate Everton as well , it’s a weird mental state and I’m not sure I could adequately explain it with a gun to my head .

It seems like in England, every club’s fans hate their own club to some degree. I don’t know if it’s investing too much time and effort into following it, or a seemingly easy game actually being very hard, or if it’s part of the British culture to just be dour and self loathing. Not sure any other country has this particular relationship with football.
