2025/26 Beto

Any striker doesn’t like balls lumped up to them even the best out there. They want the ball to their feet, through balls good crosses they can get their heads on or take a shot. No striker on the planet would do any better last night with the way the team played. Hardly any crosses at all no through balls or good counter attacking all the players wanted rid of the ball as soon as it touched their feet with passes back or all the way back to Pickford if not it was hoofed up to Beto with no one near him to pass it to if he won the ball. He was needed up top in case of a counter attack not to be all the way back in defensive areas there would be even less of a chance of chances then not like we had any anyway by you get the drift. It was shambolic team play and I seriously hope that’s the last, they weren’t worthy of wearing our badge and shirt. Moyes gives them some good home truths and then get training and motivated for games ahead play like we should. Nil Satis Nisi Opitmum. Every Everton player should know this drummed into them and I’m sure Moyes will do after that game

He wasn't great, different wavelengths sure. It's him getting it in the neck and not the midfielders who I thought were atrocious yesterday. You only have to take a brief look to see who's page is having the most discussion.

Was Beto worse than any of those midfielders who were meant to be supplying him? No he wasn't for me.

I'm bringing up DCL because it's very noticeable that the exact same posters desperate to put a boot in to Beto have spent four seasons blaming Dyche, tactics, the service, and every other player before they dared level the same criticism at Dom's performances.

All of which were definitely factors (substitute Moyes miserable tactics for Dyche) affecting his performance last night but none of the same people will bring those up in his defence. There is a massive double standard behind a lot of the criticism Beto receives.
The front 5 were unable to protect the ball in anyway during the first half. Beto was one of them but not alone.

I appreciate Beto’s honesty and willingness but it does worry me if he is being thought of as the #1 choice for the season. Play to his strengthens [which we didn’t last night] and he can cause problems, but he can also look very heavy on his feet [which I thought was the case last night] and I don’t hold much regard for his football IQ, TBH.

No striker wants that, but quite a few will do the work so the ball doesn’t just turn right back around at our defense.

He’s bad at it, we all know. But if he’s not getting chances he needs to be taken off.

Very sensible post. If everyone else is jittery around him then as you might expect, Beto who has one of the worst touches in our team is going to look poor. He's not a player that is going to turn the whole tide on his own.

This is football 101, when a team is going backwards and losing the ball easily when in possession, it's too easy to play against. If we were on top and we have runners to stretch the play, turning their players towards their own goal and making them think about other threats, suddenly that will give him time to find the space to 1) be able to hold the ball up and make a simple pass and then 2) look to be find that run for a through ball that could lead to a goalscoring chance.

People that are writing Beto off are just bonkers, he's a specific tool that needs to be used in a specific way. Don't and he will look rubbish.

Going to have play to Beto strengths because from i see so far Barry is just a younger version who likes the same through ball etc.
Think Barry will play his way into the team. He is similar to Beto but seen glimpses of him having a bit more to his game in terms of being able to take players on, bit more controlled.

Will just need time to adapt to the pace of the league imo.

I'd genuinely question how many were within ten yards of him as a significant part of our game plan was to fail to play it out of the back until it went back to Pickford to just put a boot through it to nobody.
Doesn't matter how close to him they were - he still lost all 8? The duel means it was contested and he lost them all given he was woeful all night. He's 6'4" and was bullied

If the plan is to win second balls off of him we need to commit more players close to him with a long ball, and overall move up the pitch.

Obviously our current lack of pace in the center of the park means that is an issue but it’s why, in my opinion, O’Brien and Garner must play centrally. Tarks and Keane just doesn’t work, it stretches the whole team apart.

Of course his strength is balls in behind though so can we do that more often please. Or all of the time. Forget lumping it up and do this all of the time. Fixed.

The striker needs to be an outlet at times. He's just incapable of doing it.

The team could have been set up better and we would have been better in the first half. But O'Brien being the primary target through the air out of the back is embarrassing for Beto, regardless of the set up.
