VAR

I am surprised they did not use the old rule book...they like doing that sky, but only when it's a top 6 team. I am curious why is this a penalty when your hand is against your body, and there is a deflection just in front of you.

This narrative of not deserving anything to almost justify a rubbish decision is really grating. Neville and Carragher both did it too. It was a terrible decision and cost us massively, irrespective of our performance.
It was a bad decision but I find it really difficult to blame officials when we perform like that

I know the two issues are not linked. But you have so much bigger things to worry about than refs after that showing.

This is the thread for the refereeing though. Agree we need to also focus on the team, but that doesn't mean we can't berate the terrible decision that was made which ultimately cost us at least a point.

Yes

But that was not an acceptable level of performance either. We need to be concerned about not stuff we can't control.
In a league that is fair this doesnt happen.

They were gifted a win for absolutely nothing.

We were crap, but they didnt trouble Pickford once really.

A draw was the result, which at Elland Road on a night game for their first game back, I would've took.

But we weren't allowed to, because the story tellers decided otherwise.

Thats the official line but the VAR gave it no doubts
To be fair, watching it on the TV, it looks like he gets a shout in his ear which would be from the linesperson based on how soon after it came. The totally bizarre nuance with VAR is that the linesperson can give it, the referee then gives it without seeing it, and then isn't given a chance to even check it himself as it's not part of the process unless VAR disagrees with the decision. Tarkowski in the post match said the conversation he had with the referee, who almost agreed with saying that if Tarkowski did what he described, it wouldn't be a penalty. Yet, he then didn't see it, but gave the penalty.
