Its just the game that is played during the window. To get the player you want early you might have to pay a bit more than if you play a waiting game and the player starts to look for the move. Or you wait until the selling club know they`ll be left with a player that wants a move elsewhere and they are a bit desperate to cash in and you get a better deal for waiting that bit longer. The added problem with being patient to get a deal done is someone else could come in for the player and you end up in a bidding war or lose the player to another club.
