Ranking Everton Managers This Century

….Dyche’s achievement in keeping us up with 2 points deductions, a non-existent Board and absent owner was terrific. He should always be remembered for that. He was never able to progress from that and Moyes’ certainly improved results with the same squad.
Third best in 60+ years, I believe you called it. Just so I understand the calculus, which of our trophies in that time period was Dyche's "achievement" better than?

…..I think history might show that keeping our top flight status against all the odds (2 points deductions, no board, absent owner, poor squad et al) was a significant achievement in itself.

I dread to think what might have happened had we dropped that season, it could be Dyche was the right man at the right time. Clearly mine is a contrary view but I’ll always be grateful to him for getting us through that very dark season.

He was the medicine we had to take at the time to avoid something worse. Taking it when healthy would be madness but it done the job.

Actually think his persona has tainted his achievement with us in fans eyes as he was so arrogant and dismissive. Suppose that’s he package though

I don’t care about statistics or where we finished each season.

I am ashamed that this club appointed both Allardyce and Benitez, they will always be ranked equal last of any list of our managers for ever.

Top 3

By my reckoning we've had 11 Everton managers (excluding caretakers, i.e. managed less than ten games and counting Moyes mark 1 and 2) since 2000 and it's been a horribly lean period but what would be your ranking (based on their time at our club).

My "order of merit" would be:
  1. Ancelotti
  2. Moyes (mark 2)
  3. Silva
  4. Koeman
  5. Moyes (mark 1)
  6. Martinez
  7. Smith
  8. Dyche
  9. Lampard
  10. Allardyce
  11. Benitez
I'd be interested in how everyone compares their tenures in charge of the club beyond simply the win ratio.

For me, Ancelotti was a dream, I'm probably being sympathetic towards Smith (I was still a callow youth in my thirties), harsh on Allardyce (but the football was truly awful) and I never did and never would accept Benitez of our great club.
Allardyce should be above Dyche and Lampard imo..

How is Silva above Martinez? Under Martinez we played the best attacking football I had seen since the Kendall years. Silvas reign was tepid at best. Moyes Mark 1 Will always and should be number 1 this century. He performed miracles on a shoestring budget.

How is Moyes mk 2 in half a season higher than Moyes mk1 who got us 2 x 5tb place finishes, a 4th place finish and a cup final etc?

What is this unbelievable nonsense? 😂

Mainly because Koeman absolutely destroyed this club.

He was given a war chest by Moshiri and on top of that had the money from Lukaku Barkley and Stones to go and get whoever he wanted. He also had Europe to attract them.

He gave us Schneiderlin, Bolasie, Ashley Williams, Klaassen, Siggurdson, Rooney, Sandro, Michael Keane, Cuco Martina and Vlasic.

In amongst that rubbish he did give us Pickford, Gueye, Calvert Lewin and Lookman but that hardly makes us for the damage inflicted.

Those players were on 5 year contracts on mega high wages, some of them didn’t even want to be here, I don’t think he even wanted to be here, and he only showed the slightest bit of care about the job he had when he was eventually fired.

All that money spent and he was playing back 5s with Pennington in and Calvert Lewin as right wing back. Tom Davies was outshining all those other midfielders.

Those players left us in an FFP hole that hampered every manager since and we’re only just starting to come out the other end now. What an opportunity he had in Europe with all that money behind him and he put us in a relegation battle and ensured we were ruined for years.

In contrast Benitez actually cleared a lot of FFP mess out the tube by selling players and only bringing in Gray and Townsend. Yes it didn’t work but he didn’t saddle the club with 100s of millions of pounds of multi year problems.

I’m sorry I can’t agree with this.

He had 1 full season and got us back into Europe.

We potted him too early.

The club wanted to bridge the gap with the top and spent a load of money on experienced PL players but paid too much for some, that’s not his fault.

He didn’t do the negotiations. If my memory serves me correct Steve Walsh and others were responsible for recruitment.
