Racism in football

I was at Anfield, October 1987 League Cup night game (we won 1-0, Gary Stevens). It was the first time John Barnes played against us after signing for them. The away fans were always in the far corner then, next to and backed up against the Kemlyn Road stand. Every time Barnes came over to take a corner he was pelted and I mean pelted with bananas. Every time the Liverpool fans sang; "Liverpool" the Everton fans sang "Niggerpool".

The hate in peoples' faces and the laughter from many hundreds as this was unfolding has stuck with me (when this subject comes up). I didn't throw any bananas and I didn't sing anything about niggers I just stood there wanting the ground to swallow me up. I had no reason to feel ashamed but I did because I support Everton and it was Everton fans doing this. Hundreds and hundreds of them just because 'he was one of them'. I'm not certain but I think the game wasn't on TV, for some reason, so 'we got away with it'. Me? I'll never forget it. It was the biggest mass display of racism I've ever witnessed and can recall at a football match.
LFC: they've said it was 'alleged' racism.

Utterly vile.

They threw bananas at their own player years ago lest we forget.

Think it’s a bit grim how our fans are jumping all over this try and prove a point about liverpool.

We have some very grim elements of our fanbase as well, as do most clubs.

Let’s not pretend racism is something that doesn’t apply to us. I’ve heard plenty of horrible things in my time going the match, especially on away days.
Spot on you can't stop horrible people totally social problem

It really doesn’t.

  • Irish barred from playing for Liverpool
  • LFC controlled by a viciously racist boardroom
  • anti-black players like Smith
  • Shankly telling his players black players dont like tough challenges
  • Dalglish racially abusing Barnes
  • Liverpool players hilarioulsy dressing up in Klan gear for club Christmas parties
  • anti-Italian 1985 riot causing Heysel disaster
  • Evra racial abuse and club support for it
  • Tom Adeyemi racially abused at Anfield
  • Muslim Liverpool supporters praying attacked in the stand
  • Liverpool fan making monkey grunting actions at Anfield
  • Henderson racially absuing Gabriel

  • Semanyo racially abused by Liverpool crowd

...it really DOES.

A very long time ago. Not condoning it. But think about what happened after.

Our chairman did something about it, and I think it did a very good job.

I'm after that time but I still know there's a very famous front page news article "stay away s**m"

Maybe @Joey66 or @Tom Hughes will have it

and the kkk outfit is allegedly worn by Barnes.

The heysel riot wasn't anti anything besides anti whoever was available.

I'm all for holding them to account, but when you do so with a flight of fancy you undermine your own credibility and further the harm done to those you pretend to be on the side of. It's rather lowly behaviour really mr vek.

Racism will never ever go away. It’s not possible for human beings to erase it completely, because that would require all people to not be of low intelligence.

It will all be forgotten after 5 minutes. There will be no dramatic outrage.

We live in a country where Boris fkn Johnson got to be PM ffs after his history of stupid big mouth comments.

You can’t condemn a whole football club because of the actions of 1 fan, it doesn’t work that way.

Look, I'm all for being even handed and rooting out racism in football at whatever club it's manifest at.

But it makes perfect sense to begin with - and hold up for greater scrutiny - the football club with the longest standing racist problem in English football: Liverpool Football Club.

They've been at it since the late nineteenth century when they were formed by high ranking officials of the openly racist Liverpool Working Men's Conservative Association. They've since been constantly in the news regarding other forms of racism.

Tonight we saw the latest episode of its long and inglorious history on this issue.

Doucoure last year on the Internet.
Both clubs made a statement the day after.
Not like you to miss one mate.

They got away with that easy Dave.

After years an apology from Carra saying "we got it wrong" on sky closed the book.

The accused Suarez, Manager Dalglish and the squad who wore the T shirts got away Scot free.

Suarez ignoring Evra's handshake too before their game on purpose. I'm glad the less of the two evils won that game.

Like clockwork, Liverpool fans are racist, tables turn to accusations of Everton racism 40yrs ago.

Pathetic.

Whataboutism is a social disease (and I might add, the basic “debate” tool of the far right). I did something bad now? Well I’m going to bring up something bad you did then. Then the arguing starts and you’ve basically got away with it.
