Racism in football

Racism and nazism is growing, sadly. People become accustomed to what they see others saying on social media and accept it as ok. It becomes normalised, like it becomes normalised to pay Sky for sport and soon leaves social media and comes out in every day life. I hate it, but that's what happens among the stupid, unthinking herd.

Eventually you get to the point where people who call it out get called a name like woke or lefty in a derisory context, which makes it ok to carry on as far as the ignorant unwashed are concerned.

Humanity in the uk is doomed.

Yes by a certain demographic on social media. Many who aren't even in the UK

This isn't political, this is a season ticket holder, who wasn't challenged by those around him, then took too long to get rid of him, then the police got abused by the fans for chucking him out.

You now have carragher saying it's on person in the crowd the club can't do anything.

I think this is a club problem at Liverpool with a certain set of fans who've been too comfortable with their behaviour.

Saw some vile person during a televised premier league game tonight racially abuse a player, playing for the away team in front of their own fans. Turns out he's a season ticket holder.

Not one person in the vicinity called it out or seemed bothered by it. Seems like it's an accepted behaviour.

I like to think something like that would be called out by Everton fans if seen or heard at goodison park and now Bramley Moore.

Trying to get my head round this, is this something that always happens at other grounds? Will the punishment to the fan and club be enough to stop this happening again?

I would report it if it happened near me at the match.

I heard someone call Son a racist term for a Chinese person in the Upper Gwladys a few years ago and called them out but nobody else said anything. Not that it matters, but it was the season before the Gomes tackle so it wasn’t supercharged or anything. Just real ignorance. It was a real shame to feel like I was the only person to stand up for it.

Conversely, a dad told his adult son to leave after he called someone a derogatory term for gay people and I called it out. I thanked the dad and he apologised for the son’s behaviour.

I’m a straight white male and I feel like us more than anyone needs to set the standard in that situation and call out any awful behaviour that we overhear in the terraces. It doesn’t ever improve otherwise.

That is why it is important to stand up to it whenever and wherever it rears its ugly head.
Make people aware it’s not acceptable, never turn a blind eye , that is how they thrive and grow .
Stamp it out , literally if necessary.

I know were you coming from but this is in society wether there is influencers from other places like you say.some people are horrible and nothing you do will stop them imo in alot of incidents.

No Argentina there ... its been a vile club for too long with an establishment and media that never calls them out. Predominantly right wing media won't call out a right wing club.

We are heinous cheats though,in the media, for overspending a bit, while not laying off staff during covid, having a social conscience and building a stadium.

Spot on Chris. Proudly bringing a player onto the pitch now after the match to promote a new signing. You'd just leave it after what happened today.

It seems like they're brushing it under the carpet and move on.

If an Everton fan was seen in 4k screaming racist remarks at a player on live tv (whilst winning) I'd be ashamed.

the 80s and early 90s it was horrendous, i noticed it started to ease off when we signed Amokachi and Earl Barrett.

I was at Anfield, October 1987 League Cup night game (we won 1-0, Gary Stevens). It was the first time John Barnes played against us after signing for them. The away fans were always in the far corner then, next to and backed up against the Kemlyn Road stand. Every time Barnes came over to take a corner he was pelted and I mean pelted with bananas. Every time the Liverpool fans sang; "Liverpool" the Everton fans sang "Niggerpool".

The hate in peoples' faces and the laughter from many hundreds as this was unfolding has stuck with me (when this subject comes up). I didn't throw any bananas and I didn't sing anything about niggers I just stood there wanting the ground to swallow me up. I had no reason to feel ashamed but I did because I support Everton and it was Everton fans doing this. Hundreds and hundreds of them just because 'he was one of them'. I'm not certain but I think the game wasn't on TV, for some reason, so 'we got away with it'. Me? I'll never forget it. It was the biggest mass display of racism I've ever witnessed and can recall at a football match.
