It's not over a few. The 25% sell on is the major issue given the ridiculous size of the initial fee for such an unproven player. You can either have a low fee and a big sell on or a high fee and a much lower sell on. You can't have both. It just doesn't work.
So, is the 25% based on the price we sell him for, or any profit we get for him in the future?

I'm really struggling with the number of people that just don't get this. I'm sure they think if we sell him for 80m, Southampton get 20m...
The issue is we’re already paying over the odds for him. Precedent matters in relation to transfer dealings and my understanding is Saints have moved the goals posts several times. At some point as a buyer you have to say enough is enough just out principle and to stops other clubs doing exactly the same in future deals.

yes but they can 'koff.... 45mil is more than enough for an albeit talented but low return rate winger
We are already taking a gamble paying that much

The gamble is all on the 45m which we pay regardless. Anything where we pay Southampton more, we've already won.

Yes they are being greedy toerags wanting their cake and eat it, but the needle for us doesn't move.

Yeh, I'm talking about people not understanding the sell on though, not concern over the initial fee. That's another story.

I think it's conjecture that Southampton have moved the goalposts too. I think a narrative has developed that they kept asking for more every time we supposedly offered what they asked for at the previous level of negotiation. I don't believe that is the case at all.

It doesn't move much I agree, but it feels like they're taking the pi$$

Agreed. However look at it another way, they could be fighting hard as they are confident he will be a £70m+ player soon. If that is the case and he either stays and does great things for us or we move him on for a profit and we've had the benefit of a player for no outlay.

If based on the figures above we cut the sell on fee to something more sensible like 12.5% it means they would get just over 3m on that 70m transfer, we would get 3 and a bit more. So as I said in a previous post we are squabbling over a few million pound. If we've identified him as a future baller who can do a job now, just get it done and build him up. Instead of yeah we think you're good but not that good.

This. I don't mind accepting a sell on fee but not when we are tasking all the risk with a large fee with somebody so young. You carnt say we want top top dollar, no risk on him succeeding but if he does we get a lot more when sold....well u can be u will be told where to stow it and I hope we have. We have to balance the risk reward equation and at some point if the high fee and sell on clause don't balance out we walk away.

I hear you, but we can only really walk away if we can bring in another at similar level for less cost now.
We need a RW or we will struggle all season.
It's a make or break position which we need addressed yesterday
