Paid for with your card because you picked them up and mauled them before deciding not to buy. Personally speaking I don't go into our brand new iconic waterfront stadium paying premium prices for a pint that you and your extended family have played pass the parcel with. But maybe that's just me.

It does raise a question though. If you are tailgated, who is responsible? Should it be a possibility? What's in place to prevent it? Dies this flaw render it useless in this environment?

He was charged accordingly because HE picked the two pints up.
His son picked nothing up.
The system worked as it should in identifying what he purchased.
If his son had picked anything up then maybe there's a discussion but as it stands based on the facts of what actually happened....meh.

You should use it. It worked as it should. And your experience of the new stadium hasn’t changed. All this is after the fact and and bears no resemblance of what actually happened on the day when you did things correctly and there was no issue.

I can't believe the club thought this Amazon grab and go thing would work at a football ground where there are substantial amounts of scallies who wouldn't think twice about robbing food and drink and trying to finesse the system. 
I don't agree with our seats being contaminated with every Tom, Dick and Harry sponsor but we always had EFC/Everton at Goodison and I agree the stadium will look far more impressive on the inside - y'know the 330+ days per year when it is empty with an nice EFC and Everton on our seating. I'm sure it will come, it must have been a stupid oversight by some goblin. Do that, bring our Dixie/Holy Trinity statues with us and replace 'Hill Dickinson Stadium' huge lettering on one side with 'Everton FC' and it might start to feel like home, at the test match (and I can't be alone in this) I felt we were playing our home game AT the Hill Dickinson Stadium when it should have felt like we were playing our home game at OUR home.
Shout out to Mr Drone showing me my stone on the Everton Way in one his videos. Saves me trying to get my 70 year old mum to try and find it and driving me up the wall when she can't.
I flagged this back in July as there is one at our local arena. The one time we used it two of us went through on just my card, as directed by staff at the barrier, and only what i lifted was charged.
They need the area properly staffed, with trained staff, which kind of defeats the purpose. Better with a standard bar in the long run.
