Confirmed Signing Jack Grealish

It’s about how the player sells the foul, and Grealish is one of the very best.

You don’t need stats to see those things, but the stats will show you whether what you’re watching is representative of the player’s general performance - turning a tiny sample size into an enormous one. If your sample size isn’t big enough, you can end up signing a centre back who can’t head, as Moyesy once did.
😂😂😂 That's ridiculous. Do you think stats would show he wasn't good in the air. They are a completely blunt instrument.

Who’s to say he’s playing out wide
10 requires the same amount of running, if not more. There’s a reason why we concedes so little shots under Moyes, the front 6 did plenty of work and very often gets substituted more than any other position because of the high physical demands.

Either we tweek our system to suit Grealish or he has to drastically raise his intensity to suit Moyes tactic.

I wouldn't say completely blunt. They're a useful indicator of things that could be of interest and as a guard against confirmation bias whether it be positive or negative. They can also be used to put players on the radar who otherwise could be completely missed.

For instance some people will wax lyrical about a skilful player who can beat his man and turn them inside out and as a result ignore how poor they are in a tackle or if their final ball is often off. Same way some will take against a player and ignore anything good they do while blowing up any negatives that confirm a negative bias. Some of the more in depth stats could be used to highlight potential human bias or something that has simply been overlooked.

Some people think stats are everything. Some think they have zero value - both camps are demonstrably incorrect. Look at the recruitment at clubs such as Brighton which is data led. Statistical data is heavily used in conjunction with other methods of scouting but isn't in and of itself the definitive indicator of whether a player should be signed.

Winners from this signing:
  1. Everton FC
  2. The fans
  3. The England national team
Losers from this signing:
  1. Alcaraz
  2. McNeil
  3. Our rivals in the Premier League
I think Grealish himself is a big winner in this - he will play regularly and probably have a decent amount of freedom and a team set up to support him. Hopefully he has a blinding season for both his and our benefit - hell even City will be happy if they get Grealish with a glowing reputation by the end of next season.

Let's just swap him for someone else that runs around loads then.

Our new number 18, a player to be genuinely excited about and a loan that has infuriated the media who tried to tell anyone who would listen that he wanted to go to Spurs or Newcastle when he had already agreed to come here and had no intention of joining them.
A great day for Evertonians, a fantastic day.

Kind of hope Grealish is a one off signing. Feel like Moyes has got his target, but going forward, I want players who will develop

I don’t think Everton can compete bringing in players for the “hear and now”. We need to be better at identifying talent, whose stock is rising.

I can understand why the Friedkin's want a statement signing to show we mean business, especially with the move to the new statement. But we can’t act like the Moshiri era didn’t happen. Spending big money on players with no resale value nearly killed us.

So happy to get Grealish in as a “one off” but going forward we need to build for the long term.
