RIP Captain Lovell. One of only three men who flew to the moon twice and the only one of them never to walk on its surface. In my opinion Apollo 8 was an even greater achievement than the subsequent landings. Nobody before had ever left low Earth orbit, and Borman, Lovell and Anders became the first humans to cross the trans-lunar void and be captured by the gravity of another world. Incredible.

I can heartily recommend his book about Apollo 13, Lost Moon, which was adapted into the famous Ron Howard film. Captain Lovell cameos as the commander of the USS Iwo Jima, the recovery vehicle for the capsule. The real commander of the ship was an admiral, but Lovell refused to wear the correct uniform for the rank, instead wearing his own Navy uniform declaring, 'I retired as a Captain and a Captain I will be'. Remarkable man.

I would highly recommend listening to the, not sure song is the right word, piece of music called The Other Side by Public Service Broadcasting. It is parts of Mission Control & Apollo 8 radio chatter, set to music, as Appllo 8 goes into lunar orbit. Genuinely spine tingling.

Great tune.. also there is a series on BBC sounds called "13 minutes to the moon", the first of which is about the moon landing, but the second series is all about Apollo 13.. the ingenuity shown to bring the three men back from a desperate situation is incredible. Well worth a listen

Average age of the nasa engineers for the moon landing was something like 26!

RIP Jim Lovell
