Next year he will only have 1 year left on his contract and his value will be halved, and 6 months after that he can go on a free abroad

He could also have a superb season for them and help get them promoted and earn them 200 million plus.
Even if he does this he won't sign a new deal with them, so its the gamble for Southampton of taking what we offer or wait and hope for promotion and a great season from the lad. He could just as easily down tools if he doesn't get his move so for me they're in a very sticky position. I would also think they must be struggling a bit with their finances after dropping down to the championship so may need the money.

Whatever the situation, we don't need it played out in public, albeit Southampton are doing that not us. Time to move on. They can come back to the table if they want.

The upshot is - we are still left without a RB and RW with just over a week to go until the season starts. As a result, of course the price of everyone we want in those positions is going to be rocketed up by selling clubs. For that, we only have ourselves to blame for years of mismanagement. I knew it would take the new regime time to put it right and not possible in one window, but I am surprised, as it stands, they have allowed there to be such deficiencies in key positions in the squad. Still time to go, I know.
