Stop Owling Around - Sheffield Wednesday's Dilemma

PhilM

Player Valuation: £80m

It looks as if Sheffield Wednesday, a club I've historically liked, could be on the brink of collapse.

They aren't paying staff wages, they have hardly any 1st team players (14), can't pay fees until January 2027 and may struggle to fulfil their fixtures.

Perhaps triple 7 can bail them out?

Bankrupt the club, hold him personally financially accountable for the lot, drop a division, phoenix the club, and bar him from any ownership of any business in the uk (including barring him from any board position anywhere, and not being allowed to be involved in any sport at all ever).

That'll wake him up some.

Has to be safeguards that kick in way before a team gets to this point. The league should be able to seize teams and sell them for a reasonable value to a vetted person if the owner stops paying bills and wages rather than just allowing player to hand their notice in. All that does is screw the club and not the owner.
This was my take on it, purely for the integrity of both football and the competition/EFL because they've allowed a charlatan to slowly ruin the club.

I understand about ensuring the league doesn't provide them an advantage to one team, so as you say, seize them and sell at a fair market value.

Sheffield is a great city and Wednesday fans remain loyal to their club, regularly averaging over mid to high 20,000 fans.

It's not fair on the fans that.
But I can see the method behind it.

Very sad indeed. As it stands they won't be a league club for very long and Hillsborough which I presume is the only sellable asset, isn't going to be worth all that much. Given that, surely someone can talk some sense in to the owner to accept a low ball offer to walk away with something rather than pennies.

Not that he deserves it, I just want to see the club back in safe hands.

I’ve they did go out of business their fans would have a far better time of it then this slow horrible drawn out situation.

They’ve have a fan owned club starting from the bottom, probably full of fans who play non-league/ ex-players on amateur contracts. With the size of their fanbase they’d probably not lose a game until about 5 seasons in or something. Taking the piss at these local ground where they’d have 99.9% of the fans.

Obviously horrible, but I truly believe football is cyclical and they’d be back soon enough.

It seems the current owner will sell .
But wants every penny he's outlaid back and some.
I feel the FA must get involved .
Maybe the FA should take a look at their procedure for passing fit and proper owner status before clubs get taken over by clowns like this. Oxford have a problem with theirs too, he owns the stadium and the lease is very short.

They're not the only club being strangled into oblivion.
Morecambe are also on the brink...

The consortium looking to take over ailing National League side Morecambe has said that the club will close on Monday.
Panjab Warriors said in a statement on Wednesday that all first-team operations had stopped because the club's insurance had lapsed.
The group and Morecambe's minority shareholders have now said the academy will shut on Friday and that, as it stands, the club will cease to operate on Monday 4 August.
The sports investment company, who have been in talks with the club's owner Jason Whittingham for more than a year, released a statement earlier this week to say they remain "ready, willing and able" to take over.
The Shrimps were suspended by the National League until 20 August on Monday over a failure to comply with the league's rules.
In Thursday's statement Panjab Warriors called on Whittingham to sign the deal "immediately".
Earlier this week Whittingham said owners Bond Group Investments were ready to sell and urged Panjab Warriors to make contact.

Always had a soft spot for Wednesday. Think of them as an authentic, big club - probably because they were around at the start of the premier league and Hillsborough is a proper football ground.

It's clear that all the guff around P&S rules are designed to keep the cartel at the top of the ladder insulated from competition and leave the rest to die.

Makes me wonder the size of club that has to go under before the league really gets serious about safeguarding these pillars of the community.
