Yes and people need to get over it. Most football players now are probably born from 1992 onwards, no way would Everton be a big club to them unless they sit there on Wikipedia each night (which they do not)

That is the perceived wisdom. But what if Lineker had got injured and missed and equivalent number of games? A 40 goal a season striker dictates that entire tactical approach of a team. A goalie doesn't.

Bobby did little wrong but he wasn’t Neville and if the latter hadn’t broken his leg playing in a friendly on a blooming rugby pitch in Dublin I have no doubt we win the league in ‘86 with a game or two to spare and probably completed the Double at Wembley.

Won our last silverware becuase of Southall on the day, he had lost much of that supernatural due to advancing years, still pulled a top performance out that day. And Pickford has kept us up over the last few seasons.

I absolutely loved Lineker but the season after, when we won the Title, our top league goal scorer got 14 goals. If Lineker would have got injured for a significant period of time, Kendall would have just adapted, signed someone else and still pulled the same level of performance out of the team.

We would have won nothing with even a decent keeper replacing Southall - absolutely sweet nothing.

When he got injured we were odds on to repeat - we fell off a cliff after combined with the rs going on an incredible winning streak - probably due to the fact without Southall they realised we would be dropping a lot of points and so has motivation to try catch us up.

The cup final is a one off game, anything can happen. But had southall not got injured we wound have won the league in 86, it was a nailed on certainty
