We were out for a nice drive today in Cos Tipperary and Limerick and saw a signpost for EFFIN.

Kid you not. A really bad example of trying lazily to Anglicize the original Gaelic Irish local name of Eimhin (pronounced Evin) who was an early local saint.

I'm surprised the locals haven't tried to have it changed but maybe it is testament to their sense of humor.

Monasterevin in Co Kildare (Eimhin's Monastery) was also named after him - at least the Anglicization is more accurate!!

Another one over here is Termonfeckin in Co Louth.

In Irish it is Tearman Feichín which means the church land or sanctuary of Feichín (pronounced Feh-heen). The c is silent.

Feichín was a 7th century Saint who founded a monastery there.

Again, the locals seem happy not to change the Anglicization.
