Yeah agree with this. It's very easy to just say "why didn't we go for player X when he was cheaper" after the fact. If he's any good, the price quoted is probably about right in this increasingly stupid transfer market. Providing he doesn't totally flop he should have decent resale value.

You don't pay £45m in one go, it's paid over 3 to 4 years.

It still annoys me that we always seem to pay double what these young players get picked up for a relatively short time prior to our interest.

Like the kid from Bayern for under 10 million you mean? Or Branthwaite for 1 million? Every player in the world that goes for a decent sized fee, were available for cheaper fees earlier in their careers. Every club in the Premier League could be saying “why didn’t we pick up Fofana from Genk!

If every club had an eye for talent then no player ever would be moving for any fee over 20 million ever again so it’s clearly not an exact science.
