The Oldies Thread

Btw, you may be entitled to Carers Allowance should you move back in with Mum esp. if she has any form of limiting disability. Another thing to look into.
I think you might be entitled to this without moving in. We claimed it for my Dad. The council also arranged ( at our expense) for carers to call in of a morning and check he was up, dressed and had had his cornflakes. This kind of worked for a while. Eventually he had to go into a care home ( Hurst Park in Huyton, they were good) and we did rent out his house to cover fees.
Dad died a few months ago and, whilst this is no huge deal for us, it will be at least another 6 months before the tenancy agreement ends and we can finally settle the estate. This may not be an ideal situation for everyone.

….sounds like you really need to fully understand where you stand from a legal perspective, Sue. Assuming your Mum owns the property and it passes to you, it would help if she has a will confirming this. Lasting Power of Attorney also allows you to make decisions for her and could be a consideration.

It’s not a one-size fits all situation, I suggest you make a few enquiries ;)
Lasting power of Attorney both health & financial is a must - to take out with a good solicitor -My wife had it for her late mother - it was the only way to negotiate things for he in her favour with the NHS & the Social Services - you are in control for your loved one not them - they will try to steam roll things along tell you very little of the cost - when you say no explain things please as I am the power of attorney there faces hit the floor & your loved one gets the care she or he is entitled too these days mid 50s is the time to do it a one off payment for care & finance -

When the dropped the mother in law in A&E & smashed her hip her operation failed & dementia set in - we kept her in hospital 14 months & also threatened them with legal action - having that power they listened as we applied for NHS Continuous Health Care which is very hard to get unless she had cancer - Dementia & Alzheimer's does not qualify anyone for it .... as they live longer - sad but true -anyhow she was in such a mess no home would have her....But they never gave up trying to throe her into any home & its your choice if you have that power... -

Hospital bed officers are like little Hitlers - we got her thrown out of every meeting with a stunt she tried to pull - why because we had the power of attorney ....
