Thing is, they've always spent big, it's not even just a recent thing.

Fact check: LFC spent more than Ferguson's United from the start of the Prem in 1992 until Taggart's retirement in 2013. Both gross and net. That one really does make them squirm.

Arsenal's record in the transfer market, particularly between 1996 and 2004 puts both to shame, but especially Liverpool. At least United generally spent well (back then) and got a load of titles for it. Liverpool were one of the biggest spenders in Europe and didn't win any until 2020.

They’ve always spent massively as long as I can remember. Whenever they’ve been in the slightest dip they’ve just thrown 100s of millions at the problem to give themselves a decent team again. There’s never been a window I can remember where they’ve had to forcibly tighten their belts, sell to buy etc. It’s just always been them throwing huge fees around at whatever player they want. Then they spend ages trying to convince everyone their spending is somehow different to anyone else’s.

More spending still to come apparently. They played it right by spending minimal last year but the amount they are going to sink this summer is madness. They are no different than the rest at this stage despite them and the media making every excuse under the sun why they can spend this amount.
 
I see some “journalist” or Red Media Stooge as they are more usually known is now claiming that Wharton has agreed to join them next year. All to; a)unsettle a long contract player and b) give an air of inevitably about it.
They used to call it tapping up but now they pay some just out of college nerd to do it in the guise of “news”.
