I've had a quick look at the streaming figures from the latest albums of some of the more popular pop girlies C just to test my theory. I started with Short n sweet which has probably been the most popular album of the last 12 months. It had 3 songs with well over a billion streams and 1 of around 600 million. But the majority of the remaining tracks on the album had less streams than Nothing Matters by TLDP. I also looked at latest albums by Lana, Billie, Olivia, Chappell and Sza and they all followed the same pattern. 3 or 4 bangers with the remaining tracks getting maybe 10-20% of those streaming levels. So yeah, even fans of the bigger artists are very selective in their streaming. I'm not suggesting that those albums are not good albums. The only one I've listened to properly is Chappell and that was my album of 2023. But for acts that aren't completely reliant on physical sales, the make up of the album isn't as important provided there are a couple of bangers.I agree with the first paragraph to an extent, but in a different way. No one cares about number one in the singles or album charts anymore, most streamed artists seems to be more important. Which is why Drake, Bieber, Travis Scott, SZA, Beyonce etc have 20+ songs on an album as it floods the market, there are some rules on this such as only 5 songs from a person's stream of that album count, or something, which is why some (Swift) do so many special editions. I think the 2828392 reissues of the same album is one of the worst things at the mo. But one thing about this way of them doing it, is I don't think a lot of artists have a few big songs now, they have like 10 evenly big ones. Out of the people above, I can't name their most streamed song, Inc Swift who is everywhere
I think I agree with your first point more in your second paragraph where it is fairly common for people to have the odd viral hit but the rest is pretty crap, bands like Sault and DJ/producers like Two Shell have cracked how to be good at both, but as I can only name those two who work streaming well but also have the talent to back it up (especially Sault who have like 10 albums in 5 years or something). I think there is good music every year though, although bandwise it might be a bit harder to find as I don't listen to that bands newer bands these days I guess, other than the odd one or two. A lot of the new showgaze bands seem to be guilty of one or two good songs, and the rest are pretty bland. Good for tiktok.tho
And don't get me started on TikTok.
