2024/25 Nathan Patterson

Compete and back up are totally different things. Sign someone just to back up mykolenko and we’ve failed, sign someone to compete and we haven’t. The chances of us being in a position to bring in someone who is just clearly better than a £15m, 50 cap, 100+ PL game full back are extremely slim. Bringing in a decent player with a slightly different skill set is much more likely. Tagliafico on a free would be absolutely fine for where we are, for example.
Doubt he would have got as many appearances in any other team or caps for any half decent international side. Just about every game I watched last season, the opposition had better fullbacks. Don’t know why we seem to find it so hard tbh.

Well yeah if he was English he wouldn’t have 50 caps and city wouldn’t buy him, that’s hardly a hot take is it?

I’m not saying he’s great, far from it, I’m just saying that realistically with everything else we need bringing in a left back who is a clear unarguable upgrade on mykolenko is highly unlikely to happen, and that’s fine. If it happens then great, I just don’t expect it to.

Truffert was seriously linked in Jan along with Wesley and Alcaraz.

Perhaps Moyes stopped all 3 signings and all Thelwell could magic was the Alcaraz loan?

Kayode also went to Brentford for a low fee in Jan.

Clearly its not whether the players are too expensive or not good enough for either LB or RB. There are cases where players with the right profile are moving to other clubs for low fees.

At this point of the window i think questions need to be asked of the management.

Respectfully disagree but I seem to be in the minority on this one. Don’t think any upgrade would even cost that much. 2 better fullbacks would completely transform us as a team in my opinion and has been the weakest part of our game for 2/3 years if not longer.

O’Brien is the best fullback at the club just now.

I don’t even think we do disagree to any major extent. I would like us to upgrade on mykolenko for sure, but I could say the same for the huge majority of the squad to be honest, and realistically we can’t do it all in one summer. As I said, if they bring in somebody who takes over from him then brilliant, that can only be a good thing, I just doubt it’s something high on their to do list right now.

Genuinely only just realised which thread this is. I don’t think Patterson has what it takes to become a first choice player here and I wouldn’t be particularly surprised if he’s moved on at the end of the window.

There is no question he needs to move on.

Both fullbacks are a worry TBH Patterson though had the freedom of the right wing - unused - their goal came down our other fulll backs flank !

Plus he was bog average overlapping - we must have better in the youth set up TBH .....

I only watched from the 15th minute.

As i posted before, didnt see any overlapping because McNeil moved central (anonymous) and he had Garner inside as well (fairly anonymous).

He was isolated but got down that wing at least 5 or 6 times and put balls or passes in.

Nothing negative to say about his performance. Not sure what more he would be expected to do?

Nothing went past him. No one stopped him advancing. He delivered balls to teammates.

You missed the goal he & others outpaced on the left hand side .... our team is so slow ...
